Lauterstein-Conway Massage School

One hour massage, no tipping? You won't find a better deal in town for massage, which typically run at the very least $60 a pop (or more). The students here have to practice, and you, my tense bundle of nerves, will reap the benefits of their education.

Good Luck if you need to buy something in their retail store – Good luck if you need to buy massage products in their retail store such as Biotone cremes, etc. There is only ONE person in the entire building that can sell products. If she is at lunch or not in that day you are out of luck. I recently drove in from Buda, TX because I needed Biotone. As I entered the building I was greeted my an older man. I told him I needed to buy some Biotone and he said "You can't. The only person who can sell it to you is not here". I told him I drove in from Buda and that I called earlier that morning and their voicemail greeting said the retail store opens at 9:00a.m. Tuesday - Friday. I arrived at 9:30a.m. on a Wednesday. He then said, "That's not my problem. No one knows the prices of the products and no one can give you a receipt". I told him I was paying cash and that I did not need a receipt.

I then saw a lady coming over to us and I asked if she could help me and told her about my situation. She said the girl who can sell it to me is at an orthodontist appointment and she should be in around 9:45a.m. She told me to take a deep breath and that I only needed to wait 15 minutes. What if I would have arrived at 9:00a.m.?!? I would have had to wait 45 minutes. Then the man said she might not be at all today and that everyone will be in a meeting until 4:30p.m. so there is NO WAY I could buy Biotone that day. I think he enjoyed the idea that I could not buy it.

I then remarked that it is ridiculous that only one person can sell products and that they need to change their vm greeting if no products can be sold that day. I said I was not leaving until I got my Biotone.

The lady apparently interrupted the meeting and a man came out and asked what kind of Biotone I needed. I told him. He then began to try to open the case with a multitude of different keys. None of them were working. FINALLY he found the correct key and the case opened. He then opened a notebook with a price list that was directly on the top of the front desk. At last.......I was able to get my Biotone. I find it interesting that the previous man said no one in the building knew what the prices were.

No one apologized for my inconvenience. I'll repeat that. No one apologized for my inconvenience. The lady did wright me a receipt but just to be rude I told her that I did not need one....after she wrote it out.

All in all I was only there about 15 minutes. The only reason I am writing this review is because the older man said when I walked through their door....."You Can't" and "That is not my problem".

FYI: This is the second time this has happened to me. However previously right after three people told me I could not buy any Biotone the girl walked in and I was able to purchase it.

NEVER buy anything from their retail store. (If you are lucky enough to purchase anything).

One of the TOP massage schools in the country – I have been a practicing massage therapist in Austin since 1992 and have attended well over 750 hours of training at Lauterstein-Conway. I also have over 300 hours of healing arts training from other programs. Hands down...these guys are tops in the field. The 500 hour training provides education in Swedish massage, sports massage, deep massage, clinical massage and the anatomy and physiology courses to create a strong foundation for beginning therapists. The business courses help prepare the students for the real world as either an employee or therapist in private practice. I've heard they are a little more expensive than other schools, but in my opinion...YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR and my experience as a student was worth every cent! Thinking about a career change? These are the people you want to train you. When I hire therapists for my business, or want to get a massage, my first choice will always be a Lauterstein-Conway graduate! Their internship clinics are also an inexpensive way to get a good massage. While personally, I prefer 100 minute massages, I go to the clinic once a month for a 60 minute massage just to see how the future therapists are doing and almost every time receive an excellent treatment. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! In the spirit of full disclosure, I currently have a part-time job at this school (since Sept. 2010) because I enjoy working with the students. That being said, my position has only reaffirmed my previous confidence in their programs and workshops. Having worked with the staff, I can assure you, they are genuinely kind and caring people working hard to produce top-notch therapists. Kudos to the TLC gang and HUGE thanks to David Lauterstein and John Conway for everything they have done for the massage community, not just in Austin, but worldwide!

A Really Great School for Massage Therapists – I'm a massage therapist and took my basic training at Lauterstein-Conway. I've also taken quite a bit of training at other places over the years, and the truth is that the coursework I've taken at Lauterstein-Conway stands head and shoulders above what I've received elsewhere in a number of ways.

The basic training in anatomy and physiology is specific and detailed, and the instructors make a real effort to ensure that students understand them as they apply to real clients, not just academic excercises. Instruction texts and materials are chosen or developed with an eye to students' different learning styles and abilities as well as being sources of accurate and useful information. A request for additional or differently formatted information is honored to the best of the staff's ability. Strong emphasis is placed on ethical practice and respect for the individual beliefs, anatomy and autonomy of every client. The business practices segment really tries to give students the information and resources necessary to establish an economically successful massage practice that is of benefit both to the practitioner and the clients.

The staff members, both administrative and academic, are friendly and sincerely interested in helping students to succeed both as students and as qualified therapists in business. If a student encounters academic or personal problems during the academic training period, every effort is made to support any student who is seriously interested in completing their work and going on to graduate.

I've encountered the occasional training or instructor that actually exceeds what Lauterstein-Conway has given me in some aspect or other, but taken as a whole this is the best place I've encountered by a wide margin.
