I know, I know. But guys -- you have to. Visitors want to experience this much-maligned avenue of revelry, Austin's very own version of Bourbon Street. Plus, there is true fun and even class to be had on Sixth Street, like the Drafthouse Ritz, Shawn Cirkiel's delicious parkside, and the new reservation-only craft cocktail bar, Midnight Cowboy.

I LOVE 6th street – Wow is all I can say... This is one awesome place to visit... I went for the very first time in 2010 and i have been going 3 times a year since then, I live over 3 hours away and will drive that far. Me an my girls ALWAYS have a great time everytime we go... If you never been go atleast once and you will like it....

Sixth Street Tips – Unless you are in a UT fraternity or sorority, a lot of the bars with a Sixth Street address are pretty lame (one exception off the top of my head is The Jackalope). Check out the bars along Red River for a more interesting experience. However, on Friday and Saturday nights, the police block Sixth St. to cars, and people can just hang out in the middle of the street. This is a sight to see, so I recommend walking down Sixth St. during these times, for pure entertainment value.

Also, whatever you do, DO NOT eat Roppolo's pizza. This is quite possibly the worst pizza in the United States. This should be fairly obvious upon sight of it, but I too have reluctantly purchased a plastic-y looking slice of cheese at 1:00 am, just because there are almost no places to get food late at night downtown.

If you find yourself really needing some food, you are MUCH better off walking to the Onion pizza place at 116 W. 5th (not far the center of Sixth St. mayhem). Or just ask some locals where you can find the guy selling the authentic Chicago style hot dogs out of his trailer. Trust me on this.

Question – Do you know if you have to be 21 to go to the clubs on 6th street or do they let people in that are 18?

Start and finish a night on the town on this boulevard of bars, dance clubs and more. – In Short
Austin's slick version of New Orleans' Bourbon Street is lined with dance clubs, bars, pool halls, restaurants, comedy clubs and live-music venues. There are tons of bars, which specialize in everything from frozen drinks, shots and beer, to reggae, country and punk rock. Restaurant choices include local favorites like The Hideout and Roppolo's Pizza. Expect a melting pot of folks--college kids, professionals, teenyboppers, punks, Leslie and tourists--all out looking for a good time.

Great!...on the right night – I've been to 6th street MANY MANY times...and I can tell you that on the right night, its a great place to go, but if you go on a night when not many people are out or when UT is on a break, it just doesn't seem as fun, now if you are slightly older, you might enjoy 4th street a little more, its just a litttle more laid back and the bars are still nice with some good music!

Quantity over Quality – Spend entire evning in one locale, bar hopping at its best. Check out as many bands as you desire,

hopefully you will find one you like. Plenty of Stevie Ray atmosphere to soak in, not always alot of talent. Great, inexpensive fun!

WAYYYYYY OVERRATED – When I go to downtown Austin, there has to be a special occasion for me to go to 6th Street. I would rather hang out at any of the cool places like Fado or Gingerman, which are close to 6th street, but far enough way for me to like it.

6th Street – When I visited Austin, I was really excited about Sixth Street. I had seen so much on this site about it, but when I got there I was rather disappointed. It's not all that they say it is. My friend and I ended up going to the parks and just hanging out in town.

Something for Everyone – For those who aren't big on the traditional nightlife (i.e. barhopping), horse drawn carriage and passenger tricycle rides through the area offer a view of the neat shops and always fun and diverse crowd of interesting Austinites, including various artists, musicians, and vendors.
