A museum-quality replica of Christopher Columbus' flagship floats on the Scioto River. – The Scene
The Santa Maria, a 98-foot-long wooden "nao," or merchant cargo ship, is in downtown Columbus, just north of the Broad Street bridge. The ship caused quite a stir when it was brought in for the 500-year anniversary of Columbus' 1492 expedition. You can count on a Native American protest at the ship every Columbus Day, although none as dramatic as the one in 1992, when demonstrators attempted to storm the ship as schoolchildren onboard chanted, "In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue . . . " Michael Moore of "The Awful Truth" once filmed a segment here on "immigration."
Dramatized tours with costumed crew give visitors detailed insights about 15th-century ship life. Built from historically accurate archival plans, the boat's highlight is its realistic portrayal of the cramped quarters and hellish sailing conditions Columbus and his crew suffered on their voyage. No wonder the crew intended to mutiny.
