The Muffins' recipe: one part spectator sport + one part history lesson. – First in Their Class
Many cranks speak longingly of the good old days but few would be willing to live through them. Yet that's the painstaking mission of the Ohio Village Muffins. Pioneers of vintage baseball, they take the national pastime into a long passed time, roughly 1860.
The Hometown Heroes Who Ring Their Bell
Like a cop in a b-movie, the Muffins play by their own rules. All pitching is done underhanded and all fielding is done without gloves. Among the customs unique to vintage baseball (aside from the conspicuous sportsmanship). players who score ring the bell by home plate.
There aren't actually any runs in vintage baseball; instead players tally "aces." That's just one example of vintage baseball terminology. Others include "striker" (batter) and "cranks" (fans).
The More Things Change...
Yet for all the differences, Muffins baseball is perfectly recognizable: nine innings per game, nine men on a side. And if a play puzzles the fans, the scorekeeper is there to field questions and provide background. In keeping with the Ohio Village's mission, the Muffins bring history to life but beware. They might make learning something enjoyable.
