How about some place else..... – Last night around 7pm I returned to Hana sushi for my weekly dose of yellow tail hand rolls and other fine sushi. When I mean I go out once a week for sushi I am true to my word. I have literally had sushi from every joint in river city that has a sushi bar. I had eaten here before and had tremendously enjoyed it. Last night was a different scenario and overwhelmingly disgusting. 1) the appetizer we ordered (thinly sliced beef roll w/ scallions) was on the menu but is no longer available. 2) We ordered a rainbow roll (it was grity and didn't taste fresh) 3) the same was true for the jalepeno roll, the tuna roll, the spider roll. Now for my prized hand rolls.....what a disappointment. the little yellow tail I could taste was grity, slimy and not very palatable. Triste mais vrai. If you need Sushi in RVA Akida on robinson (my favorite), or Mushi Mushi (New) in carytown should delight u.
The flair of the food equals the fire of the wasabi at this downtown sushi bar. – The Scene
A traditional Japanese meal is one filled with ceremony. Guests remove their shoes and take a seat at a Tatami table (the kind where you sit on the floor uncomfortably until your foot falls asleep) and indulge in the subtle tastes of Asian delights.
Hana Zushi specializes in the Japanese art of sushi, a blend of rice, raw fish or vegetables wrapped in seaweed. True, to the uninitiated this may not sound very appetizing. But if you're going to taste it anywhere, Hana Zushi is the place to do it. With an amazing array of combinations, the delicate wisps of ginger and the fiery wasabi dressing to the side add a kick to the relatively mild taste of the seaweed and rice-wrapped treats. A cup of sake (Japanese rice wine) may make you forget that you just ate raw fish, but be forewarned: it's potent and quick to sneak up on the unsuspecting. Don't stray too far from the sushi, however, some of the forays into other types of Japanese cuisine are not as successful here.
