Park or politics? This historical landmark proves they can co-exist in classic style. – Overview
It would be hard to find a more elegant State Capitol than this one. Originally designed by Thomas Jefferson, Richmond's capitol building remains the only place to get a glimpse of the government in action and enjoy a day at the park at the same time--just ask all the professionals who linger in front of the fountain during lunch.
Inside the Capitol, check out Jefferson's hidden interior dome, Houdon's statue of George Washington (the only one the first president actually posed for), busts of eight Virginia-born presidents, the Old Senate Hall and the Old Hall of the House of Delegates (where Aaron Burr was tried for treason). With its collection of statues, park benches and, of course, squirrels, Capitol Square is one of the city's best places to spend a sunny afternoon.
Government Center Stage – Visiting the government in Richmond is a must-do for visitors and residents alike. You've got it all: beautiful grounds, the Governor's Mansion, interesting art (Washington statue inside and massive sculpture outside!), free parking, and a sense of how the government fits physically into the real life of this city. Great jumping off place for a trip up Church Hill, Shockoe Slip, Fan, etc. A terrific place to take visitors or just to relax.
