This landmark provides a thought-provoking look at America's final clash with the British. – Overview
On January 8, 1815, the Battle of New Orleans--the last big battle of the War of 1812--took place here. Hardscrabble American soldiers, led by Andrew Jackson, turned back British troops to seal U.S. sovereignty. Monuments, a short film and a firsthand look at the battle site bring the skirmish to life.

The battlefield itself is a tangle of wildflowers. A re-created bunker summons up eerie memories. The Chalmette Monument towers as a memorial to those who fought. The Malus-Beauregard House, a plantation built 18 years after the skirmish, faces the battlefield. Re-created cannons line the rampart; the visitors' center houses the real deal and other memorabilia. The Chalmette National Cemetery is the final resting place for soldiers of every American conflict since the Civil War. Only four veterans of the War of 1812 are buried here, and only one fought on this battlefield.
