The history of diverse people, housed in a Spanish-built council hall. – Overview
Completed in 1799, the Cabildo has served under the flags of Spain, France, Spain again, then France again, the United States, the Confederate States and finally the United States again. The 1803 Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the United States, took place here. It's very text-heavy museum, which is fine if you have all day, but if an hour is all you have, be prepared to walk out frustrated.

The Experience

Follow Louisiana's history through rooms broken into separate periods: Native American, Colonial Louisiana, Louisiana Purchase, Territory to Statehood, Battle of New Orleans, Antebellum Period I through III, The Civil War, Reconstruction I and II. The museum is not something to rush through. Don't miss one of only four bronze death masks of Napoleon Bonaparte in the world. There is, however, a question about its authenticity.
