Second only to the beach, this modern shopping district is Galveston's most popular tourist hot spot. – The History
Before the Great Storm of 1900 leveled the island, the district was known as the Wall Street of the South. Modern-day high rollers have since turned empty warehouses into retail stores, restaurants, offices and trendy apartments.

Sights to See

To do it right, you should spend a half-day on the Strand. Skip the touristy T-shirt shops and look for these more interesting spots: Hendley Market has a cool collection of off-the-beaten path items. The Strand Visitors Center next door has information and admission tickets to local attractions. Col. Bubbie's is one of the biggest military surplus stores on the planet. The Tremont House is a historic hotel with an intriguing interior. The Old Strand Emporium has food-related trinkets and a great selection of imported beers--pop one in a paper bag and keep right on strolling.

Mandatory Visit – I grew up around the Galveston Bay area and saw the Strand change from a Sailor's relief stop to one of the best attractions the area has to offer.

Allow at least two-three hours to visit the shops and try at least one of the restaurants. No trip is complete without sampling desserts at the Emporium.

A visit to Captain Bubby's is always fun, even if you leave with the sniffles from all the dust.
