A favorite place for city residents and visitors to take a leisurely stroll. Don't try sneaking a dip in the reservoir, though. – The Skinny
Part of the Citiparks system in Pittsburgh, the park's history dates back to 1889, and was selected to be home for the world-renowned Pittsburgh Zoo, a sanctuary for animals from around the globe.
One of the zoo's special features is Kids Kingdom, a learning/activity/experience combination designed especially for children. There are several play areas within the zoo for children. In 1999, a baby elephant was born in captivity. Because it's operated by the city, Highland Park also hosts the Farmers Market from April through November each year, where local farmers sell fresh produce, homemade pies and other goodies at very reasonable prices.
