This place was so awesome. So super yummy! We visited on 08/11/12 and will certainly be back. Quality food as well as service and a nice homey comfortable atmosphere. Chateaubriand was soo good. We asked if they knew of anyone that had farm fresh eggs as we were camping nearby and wanted some for our morning breakfasts. It so happened one of the servers did. She was so nice and gave us her number and we drove back up the following day to buy a couple dozen. We cooked some up to have with our ginormous amount of leftover tenderloin. Wow was it a great breakfast! Thank you Bears' for helping make it such a wonderful weekend for us! Can't wait to come back...

Awesome Food!! Service was impeccable! What a great evening – Just imagine feeding 6 chefs for dinner and not one single negative comment about the quality of food and the outstanding service we were treated. Mama Bear knew how to train their cubs, with Chef Robert preparing a feast fit for a king and Thomas treated us with royalty and professional service that I have not experienced in years.

The food was properly prepared and the flavor for each menu item was distinct. We ate Lamb, Pork Chops, Chateaubriand, Chicken, Shrimp, Pickled Herring, Roasted Peppers, Smoked Salmon and an array of homemade desserts.

You haven't been to heaven till you dine at the Bears' Steakhouse heaven. We came, we ate and we conquered. We will be back next time we are in the Albany/Cobleskill area to enjoy another feast prepared by Chef Robert and Mama Bear, Mrs. Payne.

ORDER THE CHATEAU BRIAND!!! – I am glad I didn't listen to some of those reviews below, you always have to make your own opinion. I loved everything, from the shrimp cocktail (best horseradish sauce), to the tomato bisque soup (out of this world), to the awesome chateaubriand (meat was like butter) and of course the cheesecake! And the waiter was great, he did point out all the specials and recommended a very good wine. very very pleasant evening. Coming from Vienna (Austria) about 2 years ago to this area, my taste buds are spoiled, very spoiled. This was the best dinner a had since

I moved here. I will definitely bring my friends from Austria to the Bears restaurant, just to prove them there is good food in the states you just have to know where. ;)

It's all about the meat – People will tell you the The Bears Steakhouse is in the middle of nowhere, or that it's hard to find, but neither is really true. It's on NY Rt. 7, only 1.5 miles south of the intersection of U.S. 20, a very busy intersection running through Duanesburg, NY. You wouldn't expect to find a notable steakhouse out here, but it's not like it's a place all by itself out in the wilderness. In fact, there's an ice cream stand right across the street, a lodge practically next door, and two diners within a couple of miles.

The restaurant is in a moderate-sized room (holds maybe 15 tables) of the home of the owners and has a bit of a hodgepodge rustic-industrial-grandma's-house feel. On the Grandma side, there's floral wallpaper all around and a display of mostly cheap modern teddy bears (vintage bears would be a nicer touch). The Rustic comes from some exposed wood here and there, and also from a few hard wood western "wagon wheel" chairs that a handful of diners are provided. The out-of-place Industrial look comes from the vinyl covered institutional steel chairs that most of the patrons are provided with.

Our waiter was very pleasant and cheerful, though I wish that he - or my wife! - had pointed out that the laminated single-sheet menu listed items on BOTH of its sides, as I entirely missed seeing the list of appetizers and deserts on the reverse, thinking that the later must be on a menu of its own (not that I EVER order desert, I just like to enjoy reading the descriptions!). As for the appetizers, I had half-heard another server shout the list of appetizers (twice) to diners seated at another table, so I assumed our server would eventually be doing the same (I say "half-heard", because the restaurant was VERY loud, thus the need for the other server to shout in order to be heard by the people she was serving (the gals at this long table, in fact, were in a particularly loud and frisky mood, sharing sexual innuendo with our server - and he with them - frequently drawing stares from all around the room).

Dinner began with a bowl of rolls, most of which where actually stale (at least two of them were hard as stone through-and-through). Then came the mixed mescalin salad, that was fine, but not as tender as I would have expected from a restaurant with the pedigree of this one.

No matter.. this place is about meat, and there was no disappointment in the quality or amount of food we were next served. I ordered the Delmonico steak, which was about a foot long, 6" wide, and 2" thick! Easily enough meat for 3 meals, and in fact, I barely ate any of it, cutting off a large slab from one end in order to sample a few slices from nearer the center. The meat was a bit on the rare side of the ordered medium-rare, but it was still a marvel. It also came with a baked potato and a large pile of perfectly cooked, glazed baby carrots, every bite of which I devoured.

My wife ordered the pork chops, and they arrived about 2.5" thick, each chop measuring something in the neighborhood of 4" x 6". Again, enough meat for several meals. In fact, I ate a healthy portion of one of hers, and she finished that one off, saving the remaining chop for another day.

Our server came over to check on us, after the other server had taken away our meat to be wrapped, and - since he asked if everything had been to our liking - I decided I would mention the stale rolls. He was very apologetic, and sent us home with 4 soft, fresh ones, which I thought was a nice touch.

There was one final disappointment, however. When my wife and I got home, we discovered that the person who wrapped our meat tossed out the large slab I had separated from rest in order to get at the center. I'm sure there was a lot of fat along the edges, but there was also a heck of a lot of meat still in that slab!

DONT GET THE CHATEAUBRIAND !!!!!!!! – sittings are 5:30 and 8:30

wed - sat. thats it

The chateaubriand is basically a very large amount

of baked/ overcooked tenderloin, with some VERY strange seasoning. You pay $39 a person for it, a normal person can eat half, and bring half home.

I don't get why people rave about this. The one time

I got it, mine was the ONLY table in the restaurant that

had it. None of the regulars get it. Very over rated.

This is a very weird tasting meat. It was actually

terrible. All I did is marvel at the fabulous meals

being served around me to the other tables

and wish I didnt order this over cooked

giant piece of weird meat. My guests somewhat

enjoyed it, but it was not a winner. Maybe you have to

be a chateaubriand fan to enjoy this.

All dinners come with baby carrots with a brown sugar

flavor, a perfectly cooked baked potato and a nice salad.

These are the winners:

The Delmonico for about $28 is fabulous.

Its about a 22 + ounzer. a winner

The Prime rib is about $30 and you end up with

about 2+ pounds of it, so you are taking home a

nice box. If you get the individual prime rib,

its about 2.5 - 3 inches thick and covers your

plate so the veggies are on the side. Its MASSIVE

If you have a party of say 4 and order

prime rib , bring your camera, you will not believe

the giant, GIANT platter of prime rib they bring to

the table, wow. They basically bring 2 slices

per person, about 1.75 inches thick and vertically

served on a platter. Its stunning. Each person is

bringing their second slice home.

The filet mignon is $30 for one, and $40 for 2.

You'll be bringing one home. a winner

Had not tried but looking forward to:

-scallops $20

-strip and chop sampler $25

-Lamb Chops ( 3 of them ) $30 I think

they also have a chicken dinner $20,

never saw anyone get it

The beef vegetable soup is an absolute winner. $6

The shrimp cocktail is 5 very large shrimp with hot red sauce for $11. winner

FANTASTIC is the herring apetizer for $6, wow was

that good and MORE than enough to split 4 ways

Plan on spending $60 - $75 a person w tip.

Plan on being stuff to the gills.

Plan on a cooler to bring home what you

cant eat.

You better be hungry!! – This is a nice little restaurant. Service was a little slow, but we were very well treated. Went with a party of six. 5 of us had pre-ordered the Prime Rib. What we got was 10 healthy slices of prime rib on a platter, along with plenty of baked potatos and baby carrots. Enough left over for each of us to take a slice apiece home. The meat was good, but not quite as good as some of the other reviews would suggest. The person who didn't get the rib got scallops. There were a ton of them, and they received a very good review. Desserts were (to me) the best part of our meal. We had several different ones, and the waiter even threw in a complimentary piece of cheesecake, just for us to try. They were all excellent. Definitely worth saving some room for!! Bill for 6 of us was right around $300, including tip, with no alcohol. Good place to go. Make sure you make reservations. I will definitely go back.

Worth the drive – My first time eating at The Bears, and not the last! My wife and I were with 2 other couples who went with the Papa Bear specials and came away with full stomachs and food for the next day.

The service was superb,he was attentive and witty and made us all feel like we were family in his home.

Amazing!! – Being from NYC we are spoiled with amazing restaurants, so naturally, the hype we heard about the Bears was taken with a grain of salt. Were we in for a surprise. Our experience from start to finish was quite possibly the best dining experience I've ever had. Everyone was friendly, attentive and the food was absolutely out of this world. Each course is meticulously prepared - this family really cares about what they do and it is readily apparent. We can't wait to go back again and again. Don't miss this true gem!
