the best and weirdest place out there – If you love improv, folk art and good yet non-commercial artists, warm and cuddly old timey atmosphere, this is the place to be. Drinks are really cheap and the shows... Well, they can be rather bad, but some of them just leave you speechless and you wonder how that someone isn't famous yet...

Not bad for being supported completely by donations. Drunks are after all, one of the most loyal groups out there, especially when it comes to there local watering hole. Most of them probably drop their wallet on the way out anyway and that wouldnt notice the dontation otherwise.

Tiny NoHo performance workshop with quirky following of local music lovers, their pets and a global internet-broadcast audience. – The Scene
Created as a haven for performers otherwise vulnerable to an exploitative club scene, this nonprofit dive is run by a network of volunteers and maintained by donations. It's also fur friendly--well-behaved pets are welcome--and high tech. Six Web cams broadcast live performances to an ever-growing worldwide audience. This cozy performance space is a veritable hodgepodge that can only be fully understood when experienced. Don't expect a doorman, a cover charge, or servers hawking drinks here. At the Shed, it's all about the music.

The Draw
Free-thinking music lovers and their furry friends flock to this homey nook to support independent artists. Largely unknown but invariably gifted artists perform everything from folk to jazz to rock, often encouraging the audience to join in the fun. Amidst the colorful mishmash of quilts, sound equipment, bookshelves, stuffed animals and activist newspaper clippings, snag a spot on the comfy sofa bed and absorb the whole wacky experiment.

Eclectic Musical Showcase – Try to catch Fred Sokolow one night. I saw him do Gershwin tunes on the electric guitar. I've seen him there playing guitar, banjo, mandolin, dobro and other things with strings, country and blues on his own and with former NGDB member John McKuen, fiddler Ian Whitcomb, and Fred's own son, Zachary, an accomplished musician on the banjo. The shed seats about 50 -- on chairs, couches, and the floor. The mix is mostly accoustic, but anything goes: blues, jazz, folk, all sorts of solos and ensembles. There are snacks in the back, but no dinner, so eat before you go. It's worth a try even if Fred's not on that night.
