I hope things improve. – I went to George's a couple of times and thought it was mostly atmosphere with some good (but not great) food to enjoy. You pay for the atmosphere and can enjoy a little snob appeal. Normally I'd say it's worth at least 3 stars had it not been for last time I was there... Keep in mind the last visit was New Year's Eve at the beginning of 07... But I figured maybe something's changed. I hope so.
I sat at the sushi bar... The rolls were large, loose and poorly made. The fish quality was 'just ok'. It was definitely amateur night it seemed. However, there were things crawling around in the sushi case, near the fish. My wife and I decided lost our appetites. It was loud and crowded that night and finding a manager was proving a challenge. So, we just left never to return.
FYI, I can't say the name of the things that were crawling because this site won't allow me to use the word. The only reason I'm writing this is because I saw George's come up as a potential sushi restaurant in a search for others... and just felt compelled to share this cautionary comment.
I can only hope they no longer keep an entomological experiment in their sushi bar but there are so many good places in Durham to have sushi that I can't imagine why anyone would choose George's.
Poor service, an old waiter is discriminator... – I came to this town on business trip from NY and heard about good reputation for this restaurant, so I picked here for my dinner. I had a seat but waiter had never shown up. I think my seat was an area for middle-aged waiter and he seemed not to want to take my order. Another young waitress realized it, and she took my order on behalf of him. Food itself was not bad, however it was definitely terrible experience for me. How poor he is to live in such a small world. He should live in NY, so he could realize how the world is changing, hopefully?
The sushi is amazing – George's Garage is truly one of my favorites. I must say though that the sushi is the best. Not only is it the freshest, but the man behind the sushi (Alex) is among the best. My wife and I look forward on the weekends to enjoying a relaxing evening of good drinks and great sushi.
Missme2 – I tried it once and was completely hooked. A native Durhamite showed this Raleigh person a whole new side of Durham on Ninth street. I enjoyed watching the Sushi bar the guys lools as if he enjoyes his job. I have watched him make the decorations from the items at the Sushi bar. The atmosphere is always nice and I always get excellent service. It quickly became a favorite of mines! I rate it a 9 . It was so nice that I visited twice and had the same menu items all was wonderful!!!
what more could you ask for – no offense, but i cant believe from some of the recent reviews that you could be talking about the same place. Georges is a great restaurant overall that provides more options than most. the grilled ribeye is phenomenal!!! and they have some great sushi even though the sushi guy seems a bit "angry." i've been there several times and love the atmosphere, this place has great energy....sometimes the bar is dead but other than that, Georges is like no other..
Avoid at All Cost - Go to Brightleaf Instead! – What a lame excuse for a restaurant! My fiancee and I have given George's Garage about five occasions to prove itself, and every single time, we were disappointed.
The worst was last time. They served us some bread, which had mold on it. When we asked for new bread, the waitress asked why. After we told her, the manager came to our table with a loaf of bread to supposedly show us that it wasn't mold, it's just the way it's made! He essentially lectured us on how bread is made, and my fiancee is actually a baker! His patronizing attitude ticked us off SO bad that we now go out of our way to tell everyone we know about how crappy this place is.
Oh, and that's without even mentioning the waitstaff. I once had a waitress told me in her broken English "We don't HAVE espresso here", when it says so on the damn menu! The rest of them seem to be hired for their Paris Hilton-like demeanor rather than their actual professionalism. Why is this place still in business? With the alternatives in Durham, you'd think the market would have punished such an abortion of a restaurant, right?
fancy menu comes to town – One of George's many restraunts in the area, George's garage is satisfying, especially for lunch. Try the gourmet buffet, but be cautious with the mashed potatoes! They are very heavy and you're paying by the lb! Dinner prices are high and the quality spotty. Avoid the late night bar scene unless you are a freshman or want to be hit-on by one of the oily older crowd mixed among them. The drinks are over priced and they have a self awareness that can be nauseating.
TRY THIS PLACE! – Outstanding food, dining, variety, and wait staff. We have had wonderful experiences here. You will not regret anything you order on the menu. We've been treated like family, and always hae excellent recommendations from the waiter/waitress. Enjoy!
Delicious Food And A Nice Night Out! – I have been here on several occasions, and have enjoyed everything from the sushi, to seafood, to a burger, and have enjoyed it each time... I even went to the Thanksgiving Buffet, and it was absolutely amazing... The food was soooooooo delicious! Definately the best buffet I have ever been to... Just as good as home!
I brought the Triangle Singles Dining Out Group (Meetup) here this past winter, and we had a great meal... The wait staff was pleasant, though a little slow at times...
The food was delicious, and everyone enjoyed it very much... From the lamb, to the shrimp, to the vegetarian lasagna to the sushi... It was all good!
I would highly recommend taking a date, family or company to this restaurant anytime!
