My go to restaurant for ANY occasion – Chloe is, hands down, my favorite restaurant in Philadelphia. It is not cheap, yet is affordable and well worth the price. I recommend it to any one that asks, for any occasion, and have only received great feedback in return. It is a quaint, intimate restaurant that even when full, gives you the feeling that these are your own private chefs/servers. When I have the time, in the fall/winter, I try to dine here every friday night and am amazed that I have never had to wait. They do not take reservations yet even on new years eve the wait was not obnoxious and the atmosphere was so fun that my party ended up making friends with another group. The servers are very personable and the food... Well don't get me started. I was a vegetarian for 14 years yet still found new and exciting things at chloe. Everything is made fresh on the premises and the desserts are to die for. Between my boyfriend and I, we have tried everything on their menu. There is nothing that we wouldn't recommend. Go see for yourself.
Is the customer always right? – This was one of many times dining at Chloe and usually have a fantastic experience, however my last meal may be just that.
I tried to add something to my Chloe salad and was told by the waiter "she won't do that" I assume he was referring to the chef. I was just puzzled by that since it was just adding an ingredient from another salad onto the Chloe salad. I've had this experience before and it really makes me wonder what the rationale could be. Whatever the reason, it spoiled the rest of the meal, and in the end cost them more than the trouble it would've been to accommodate the request.
If I were the server, I would've figured out a way to make my guest happy regardless of the policy.
wonderful dinner --Thanks Colleen – This was my first time at Chloe. On a Saturday night, I was told that there was going to be an hour and a half wait, which knowing the long timeframe, was pleased to find that the wait was 45 minutes. The description of specials was presented in an appealing manner, the meal was quick to be served, delicious, and the atmosphere was quaint and personal. As a BYOB restaurant, any dish could please our choice of wine, which was a pleasant surprise. More importantly, our hostess Colleen left an everlasting impression and has caused me to write this review. I cannot wait to go back.

BEST BYOB IN PHILLY – Let me tell the other side of the "Memorable?" post by theappetite on 5/2/09. The story would lead you to believe that they had ordered their desert & coffee, asked for the check & then asked to have ANOTHER bottle of wine opened – not quite. They had long finished desert & coffee & had paid the check. A party of 6 had been waiting outside for the table. The waitress told the woman very politely that she would open it, but that they could not drink it there because they needed the table. She agrees & does not appear to have a problem - then turns around to the others & tells them how they were basically just told to get the hell out! HUH? Another woman (the one who wanted the wine opened) who was slurring her speech & flailing her glass around, repeats about 6X, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?” - much louder than she realized because drunks never know their own volume. It was only after this uproar did the hostess step in to explain that they could not sit there & drink with people waiting for the table. As they continued to twist the story & talk trash about the staff who had made every attempt to be polite, I could not take it anymore & had to speak up - pointing out the group waiting outside. theappetite thinks I was explaining the dynamics of BYOB dining? No, I was explaining the dynamics of not acting like an ass! She tells me how much they just spent – um, so? Your not paying for the wine you want to sit there & milk. Even her post announces the amount of the check & tip–as if that entitles them to take business from a small restaurant, take tips from a wonderful waitress & keep 6 people from enjoying their meal & spending just as much. SELFISH! Take your money to any one of the restaurants in the area that have a CASH bar where you can sit & drink yourself into a blackout & PAY FOR IT.
What’s with the "crown" references (mind you it was a dollar store tiara being worn for fun). I would rather “announce” my bday, than announce that I've had too much wine by the way I act. Had they gone to my second favorite BYOB, La Locanda, they would have been told to get out just the way it played out in their heads - I wonder how that post would have been embellished – that they were punched in the face? - now there's a fantasy!
I'm sure they believe that their version is truth, but several sober people saw it different. Nearly everyone applauded when they left & the thank you shouted from one of the other patrons was for finally leaving!
Fabulous! – When we walked into Chloe, the amazing Flavors of the food immediately got my attention. The waitress greeted us with a smile and kindly said she would seat us when our party was completed, in the mean time she offered to open our wine. While the restaurant was pretty full, we wondered where she would seat us! We were a party of 6. As we sipped our wine, I was observing the the cozy ambiance, along with the two servers glidding by eachother working in high volume. Several others came in after us and put there names on a list. (one of which seemed to be a regular) whom, gave the server a hard time because she was not going to be seated right away! The server explained that a party of 6 was infront of her, and offered to open her wine while she waited. Immediately, after our party was completed the server rearranged some tables and sat us comfortably in the back of the restaurant.
Well, I dont know what everyone is complaining about! The food was amazing. To start we ordered the Fennel with Mozz Chesse, Potato soup topped with truffle oil, (unbelievable) and the beat and chloe salad. For our main dishes we got the Ribs, served with Mac and Cheese, the Halibut Special topped with ham, and the Pan Seared Scallops. To end our night with something sweet we orded the banana bread pudding with Pumkin Ice Cream, topped with Carmel Sauce, the cheese cake, and the peach cake with coconut gelato.
All and All we had a fabulous time. The Flavors were amazing, The Service was Sweet, and the Ambiance was Cozy! What more could you ask for, the first weekend of fall....
What a disappointment! – We just got back from our first dinner at Chloe and will never go back. The food was fair - a little bland (we needed to ask for salt) and the service was slow even though there were only three other tables in use. However, the HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, especially from the owner/chef sealed the deal. One would think that with an empty restaurant and mediocre, over priced food she would try to be a little more welcoming to the few patrons there.
As chef/owner I am put off by the fact that this reviewer did not tell everyone why they thought I was rude...the truth of the matter is we would not except a gift certificate that was 3 months expired. The expiration date is 1) clearly written on the certificate, 2) explained to the buyer of the certificate.
Rudest Staff – When you have pretentious people who are in the position of being in customer service, it is the most unfortunate circumstance for both parties. Let's face it, clearly the staff of Chloe hates their jobs otherwise they wouldn't treat customers with such disgust running off their faces.
The food was excellent, but I would never EVER go back there because of the service. When we confronted our waiter about him being so rude to us, he simply said "I'm sorry you feel that way."
I hope he gets fired.
Memorable? – Where to start...
So, we thought we were going to be seven. We were told that Chloe does not seat more than six.
Fortunately, we had a last minute cancellation which trimmed us to six.
The staff was more than accommodating in arranging our seating.
The menu was small, but had an ample and varied selection. We ordered both appetizers and dinner.
The ravioli and the oysters drew raves. The asparagus was a little more burned than grilled, but on the whole, there were no complaints.
Five of the six dinners were perfect. The special of the day, halibut, was superb and about as large a portion as one could possibly expect. One diner in the party ordered salmon well done which, while "overcooked" to the rest of us, was done perfecly to her liking. Kudos to that kind of service.
The only meal that was lacking was the ribs. They were underseasoned, undersauced and undercooked. Honestly, if you're not a 'rib joint' you shouldn't offer this item. Ironically enough, the side dish that accompanied the ribs, macaroni and cheese with truffle oil, was unanimously voted as the single best menu item at our table. It wasn't even close.
Then the fun began. Ugh.
We ordered dessert and coffee and asked for the check.
We also asked if they would open our last bottle of wine.
Even though we were six splitting a bottle (one glass per head) some woman who worked there in some capacity and was wearing a crown to signify that it was her birthday felt compelled to tell us that we needed to leave soon.
It wasn't so much that we didn't understand that a 30 seat restaurant needs to turn over tables to be profitable or that we wanted to stay much longer. It was that she was blatantly impolite about it.
This became the subject of conversation at our table amongst a few of the diners.
A nearby table of two gentlemen, one of whom was now wearing the aforementioned crown, chimed in and attempted to explain to us the dynamics of BYOB dining. Gee, thanks.
The woman who had been wearing the crown came back to our table and informed me directly that she didn't want us causing trouble among the customers.
"We don't need that" and "We could take it elsewhere", I believe she said.
For the record, she initiated any rancor with her rude demeanor.
The nearby table, presumably of regular customers (as evidenced by their familiarity with the staff), interjected of their own accord.
And, I was uninvolved with the entire incident until it came time to 'reprimand' us.
After we left a gentleman came outside on the stoop and hollered a "thank you" to us on the corner. None of us were sure if it was sincere or an immature, sarcastic provocation.
Either way, lost in the whole experience was very good food and even better service from our waitress (who was very contrite). I actually felt bad for her. It is difficult to make a living when people with whom you work are operating against your interest. (We still left her $70 on $280 as this was none of her doing.)
I thought the meal was four-star good. However, I cannot get past the fact that we treated so disrespectfully.
I can see this place being well liked for the food.
But, I will never dine there again.
There are just too many good restaurants in Philadelphia that don't act they're doing you a favor by 'allowing' you to eat there.
First visit to Chloe – We were delighted to be able to try out Chloe with out-of-town guests Saturday night. Our game plan on the busiest Saturday in Philly (convention, World Series game, Penn Family weekend) was to dine early-we were a party of 5. Raining and miserable outside, the candlelit charm of Chloe was very inviting. The decor is warm and cozy. What was not so inviting was the surly hostess that would not seat us until the group member parking the car showed up (even after we stopped by the restaurant to inquire about a group of 5 before we picked up our out-of-town guests at their hotel.) Yet, while dining, I noticed a couple seated at a table of 4 alone for a bit until their dining mates eventually joined them. They must be regulars. On a high note, our waitress was terrific (dressed in her Utley Phillies shirt) and made up for the sourness of the hostess.
As to the food, our appetizers and desserts were absolutely delicious - a melange of salads, oysters, and a shrimp dish started off the night along with the hummus and bread brought to the table. Nice touch. The entrees were not as memorable. The stuffed pork chop was overcooked and the scallop with garbanzo beans had too many oily beans. The tuna diner loved her meal. We split two desserts among the five of us and the banana bread pudding with vanilla ice cream was perfect for a fall night and the chocolate mousse was light yet had the perfect chocolate touch. Bravo.
Personally, I will not be running back to Chloe as there are so many other BYOB options in Philadelphia but I would recommend it with a caveat. Order several appetizers - skip the entrees and everyone order dessert.
SO GOOD! – I recently went to this restaurant because I am always looking for great byob's in the city and wanted to try something new. Before I decided to go I read the reviews on here and was a bit hesitant after reading some. I wasn't nervous about the food because 90% of them were good but there were a handful of scathing reviews about the staff... and i have to say i do not know what night they went on but the staff WAS AMAZING!!! and the food was so freaking good! It was well prepared and had a complex modern favor palette. I can't wait to go back and try some other items on the menu. They were beyond friendly and our waitress was an absolute doll! She explained all the specials in detail and was very knowledgeable about any dish we had questions about. After we were done eating we finished a very large bottle of wine and was not rushed at anytime to leave, mine you it was not a weekend and wasn't super busy. I will most certainly go to this restaurant again, and SOON! It is a new additional to my other favorite Philadelphia BYOBs!
