The Road Less Taken
Slightly off First Friday's beaten path and tucked away in a far corner of the King William district is Sala Diaz, a small two-room gallery that exists in a duplex on a residential block. Part of the reason for Sala Diaz's enormous success is that it has always been the vision of artists?five years ago artist Alejandro Diaz moved his bed into the kitchen of his apartment and gave birth to Sala Diaz.
Host with the Most
Over the past five years the gallery has hosted many exhibits by up-and-coming local and national artists including Karen Finley, Jesse Amado, Callida Borgnino, and Todd Brandt. While the work tends toward sculptural installations that invite spectators to interact with the pieces, it's the climate which the gallery itself promotes that compels patrons to interact with each other. It is indeed a special treat to find such low levels of pretension in the company of such good work.
