WOW!!!!! nasty food wakale – Let me tell you the food was cold and nasty I'll never come back...
Palma de Cera is way better rated one of the top 5 restaurant in Houston woohoo. Best restaurant ever.
Very bummer :( – Very beautiful decor, but when we came by, the place was full so we asked to make reservations for the next day!!
But, then we found out that they don't make any vegetarian dishes :(
Service was not remotely worth the $30+ entrees – The food was mediocre, perhaps 2.5 star worthy (out of 5). I ended up ordering the pork chop, which I found well cooked, but the accompanying side dish was over salted.
The most annoying aspect of dinner was our waiter, Tony. He interrupted our conversations, talked down to my friend by calling her "Sweetie" and "Honey", and lacked any remote sense of class. He was pushy about whether or not we wanted to order drinks, but when my friend ordered a mojito, he came back 5 minutes later to tell us they didn't have it available.
I originally wanted to order veal. Tony made a face and said he did not recommend the veal chop because even though they had veal in stock, it was not fresh. If you have poor quality meat, you should get rid of it, NOT tell your customer "Hey we have under-quality produce that I would not recommend you eat."
Last, Zula would not honor a certificate I had from Restaurant[dot]com, claiming they never gave Restaurant[dot]com those rights. However when I called Restaurant[dot]com, they stated all certificates posted have had the approval of the restaurant owner.
I emailed all my grievances to the general manager of Zula (Johnathan V.), and I have copied his response (verbatim and with all its grammar mistakes) below. I believe he should have partially compensated us for our bad experience, not spend over half of his email arguing about the Restaurant[dot]com issue. Obviously either he or Tony is being dishonest, since both [1.] the great quality of food according to the general manager and [2.] the unfresh veal according to Tony cannot both be true.
I was shock reading your email. I also spoke with our server Tony about this matter.
Our POS system were down yesterday and is in the process of getting fix asap.
I can assure you our food are the top grade quality or we don't offer at all to our customers. We never had any item that is not fresh nor at our standard.
As regard to the Restaurantcom We don't know how they have our restaurant on their system. We have never agreed with the $25 gift certificate, we have never done business with them. Therefore, we cannot honor and nor accept any offer from this web site. I would recommended for you to contact them direct if you have paid for this coupon online. I sincerely sorry for this inconvenience.
Again, on behalf of entire staff at Zula and Tony himself, I am so sorry that you were upset especially with the Restaurantcom issue. If there is any thing I could do, please do not hesitate to let me know.
OMG! So romantic – We love this place! My husband and I first came here for a restaurant week deal and was truly impressed. It has a great ambiance, excellent servcie and amazing food. The restaurant is dimly lit and has a live music with Jazz and Blues music.
For all the food we got, I love every single dish from the spinach avocado salad , River trout, best Scallops I ever had, to my citrus creme brulee. If you want to impress someone, that is the place to go. Try they Pre-fixe menu for $40 per person. it worth it.
Mediocre at best – We went before a concert. My drink had soap in it (not that big of a deal...really), but the waiter argued with me and told me that I was wrong - even though there were actual suds in it. The shrimp was over-cooked and rubbery. The seafood cocktail app was so spicey it was inedible. The crab cake was decent with a very nice sweet sauce. Overall, if it wasn't as pricey, I wouldn't have been as critical. But, I had 2 drinks (just gin/tonic) and 2 apps for $46...not worth it.
Disappointed anniversay dinner – My husband and I went here for our anniversary and we were both very disappointed. The food was uninspired and trying to hard to be something grand and failing miserably. I ordered a filet medium well, which did not arrive medium well. It was covered in butter and rather fatty, which just confirmed what I was thinking this is not a good filet cut. I won't be going back.

Fantastic ! – My folks took me here for my birthday after a friend of mine recommended this place to me a billion times. I love steak and found the steak to be on the good side. The potatoes, which were also mentioned were okay. but aside from those two things, the rest of the meal.....WOW. The salad, steak sauce and especially the rasberry bread pudding were without a doubt the best i've ever had. The steak sauce was so good, that i practically smothered my steak in it (we even purchased a bottle for home) the bread pudding was so good, i was licking my fingers after i was done it was so tasty. couple that with some of the best service i've had at a restaurant, and you have a place that will be seeing us again.
Horrible Restaurant! – I must say I am very disappointed in Zula Restaurant!
I made reservations for 28 well in advanced of our scheduled December 15, 2008 dinner. Our reservations were for 7PM and most of our staff was there by 7 but some showed at 7:15pm. When finally seated, about 30 minutes later, there was still a wait, no one came and took a drink order or offered water to the guests. Some folks did not get desert because by 10pm they really did not want it at that point. One of the gentleman was celebrating a 40th birthday and I asked them to have a cake with candles on it and they brought out a cupcake with a sparkler. The waiter dropped an entire tray of food and by 10PM half of our guests had still not been served. When some of the entrees did arrive the meat was not cooked to order and the sides were cold. AND there were only three other people in the restaurant! This is EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING!
I emailed and talked with the restaurant manager Julie Vo and was told nothing but lies and they would not work with me at all. I was told our first guest did not arrive until 7:23pm because they have a video. Excuse me, several of those individuals are always prompt and when they say they showed up before 7, I tend to beleive them. Julie also indicated that I Tony, their head waiter asked my boss said the service was fine. I think not Julie. In regards to the cold food I was told that it's hard to get that many dinners our and all be hot. Excuse me, that's the restaurant business. The food wasn't even warm it was COLD! Then Julie tried to blame me stating that I made the decision to have off the menu instead of a set menu but we never talked about having a preset menu.
The most disturbing part is when I called, and I was as pleasant as I can be, she immediately started pointing fingers. If anything dinner should have been free since most did not get theirs and when they did it was horrible! This was a CEO taking out his direct reports and their significant others out for a nice or what should have been nice holiday dinner! Iam horribly embarrassed as I was the one that suggested ZULA.
When folks asks for a recommendation, I immediately tell them where not to go!!! Don't go to ZULA!
I had to give it one star because otherwise I couldn't publish my review but I wouldn't give it any!
Never Go Back! – The restaurant smelled musty. Our food was cold and was not great. We won't be going back.
