This touch of the Rhine among the redwoods is one of the most popular destinations for visitors. – Overview
Brothers Jacob and Frederick Beringer left their German homeland to seek their fortunes in the United States. Their quest brought them to California, where they founded the Beringer winery in 1876. The historic 17-room Rhine House was built in 1883 as a re-creation of the family home in Germany. Today, the house stands nestled in the redwoods and serves as tasting center, retail store and hospitality center. A courtyard with a fountain, white roses, camellias and rhododendrons greets visitors.
The Beringer hillside wine cellar is a highlight on the winery tour. Workmen labored for years in the 1800s to chisel out the stone tunnels that are still used for barrel aging. The tunnel network drives hundreds of feet into the mountain, and maintains a perfect year-round temperature of 58 degrees. Tours finish with a complimentary wine tasting.
