An ambitious institution gains strength from being part of a culturally focused cooperative. – The Scene
Founded in 1973 at Yeshiva University in Washington Heights, this museum relocated to its current home in 1999 when it joined forces with four other institutions: the American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institution and TIVO Institute for Jewish Research. This partnership ensures that the museum not only reaches out to its core constituents, but that it forms an institutional community as well. An eclectic gift shop and a cafe serving kosher food are just a few of the fine touches that fend off any corporate coldness.
In addition to its four gallery spaces, whose rotating exhibits feature contemporary art, historical exhibits, outdoor sculpture and a children's workshop, the museum has access to a 250-seat auditorium, a research library and a public reading room. Strangely, there are no permanent exhibits.
