A Hot Mess!!! – NYSC is one of the best low priced corporate gyms out there but this location is a slap in the face to NYSC's reputation. The price for a gold membership at $60-$70 and a passport membership $60 plus depending on if you want to be month to month or on a year contract is low to average for NYC. In my mind this location you definitely don't get what you pay for....
There are a lot of different types of people that go to the club and it is a time bomb waiting to go off. You got the "thugs," gay and black/latino, older aged white men and homeless types that probably pay a membership just to get a good shower.
There are some serious lifters here but for the most part thugs of every age trying to be "hard", gay men of color trying to get at the thugs and the older white men just drooling.
The staff for the most part is rude, inconsiderate and have a unprofessional mindset. The only person that has any clue how to run a gym is a trainer named Tice.
The bottom line is if you want drama, lack luster amenities and you like fighting off the locker room addicts especially if you are endowed this is the place for you! You will love all the sexual action going on in the sauna and steam room. This NYSC seemed like this was high school.
If you want a serious gym with great amenities give a few extra dollars to your membership rate at a better gym in NYC or a different NYSC location. If you are gay I am sure there are better ways to meet people then at this gym. Trust me you will thank me!
low $ - 91st Street YMCA
low-med $$ - Crunch 83rd
med-high $$$ - 24hr Fitness Ultra Sport (53rd/Lex)
high $$$$ - Reebok (Columbus Circle)
The most dynamic, diverse, and down-to-earth gym in NYC – I have been a member at MANY gyms in my 30-years and this is by far the best . The atmosphere is so laid-back and friendly. Everybody mingles in a non-judgmental way. I have never experienced a gym where you don't experience "the looks" like in other gyms ... or people fighting for time on machines. The staff is AMAZING! From the front desk, to support staff and the GREAT trainers.
The pre-season conditioning class has given me a place to feel like a kid playing again while getting the best workout ever -- and it feels like family. It is a greatly diverse, dynamic and welcoming group.
This go-to gym's red-and-white logo is widespread across all boroughs. – In Short
With expansion into the outer boroughs, Newark and Long Island, NYSC's locations have become so ubiquitous that New Yorkers are likely to have a location near work or home, if not both. This emphasis on convenience extends to its signature circuit training program, the 22-minute Xpressline--not to mention the range of equipment, from Cybex and Icarian machines to Hammer Strength free weights. Other offerings include classes that focus on core-strengthening, flexibility and kickboxing.
Hip Hop Happenin'! – I like this gym. It's not one of the larger ones, but it's got what I need. Difficult cycling classes, a good variety of classes, excellent personal trainers and massage. The music is hip hop and rap, not my favorite, but everyone is relaxed and down to earth, good atmosphere. Lot's of professionals. Nice people.
