The accent is on women of the African Diaspora in this West End art museum. – The Museum
Opened in 1996, the venue houses a permanent collection of more than 500 objects from America, Africa and the Caribbean. While the collection's greatest strength is modern and contemporary works on paper, there is a growing focus on works in all media by African-American women artists. This is the only museum in the U.S. with a mission to emphasize art by and about women of the African Diaspora. Exhibitions curated from museum holdings alternate with thematic shows involving modern and contemporary African-American artists. Bill and Camille Cosby's generous gift to Spelman College made this museum possible.
The 4,500-square-foot exhibition space is situated on the campus of the country's oldest historically black college for women. Founded in 1881, the historic 32-acre campus was created in 1883. The private liberal arts school west of downtown Atlanta ranks among the top liberal arts colleges in America.
