Confession: The last big, collective event I experienced at Mother Egan's was the 2008 presidential election, and ever since it closed in 2010, I've missed it dearly. This is less than a tip than an homage to a bar that I wish would come back someday, a Sixth Street Bar that didn't feel like Sixth Street -- i.e., one with bad music and dollar shots -- but rather, like a reliable nighttime companion who kept the light on for you and coaxed you back home. Rest in peace, Mother Egan's.

Mother Egan's is the best Irish pub in Austin. – Since moving here from Boston, Egan's is the only bar that has felt to me like a true Irish Pub. Along with pouring a great pint, they have a good variety of food options (all that I have tried have been well done). Its hands down my favorite place to "belly-up" with some friends and banter with the bartenders (who provide you with attentive service and at the same time are not afraid to bust your chops!). Throw in 4 dart boards and and big patio and Egan's is a can't miss.

Great Irish Pub – One of the best places in Austin to have a few pints. The atmosphere is great, the waitstaff even better. I've never had anything less then a fabulous time there. The place is relaxed, and whether you are with a group or on your own, you'll feel right at home. It's the best Irish Pub I've been to since Doolin. If ya can't have a good time at Egan's, you should have your head examined...

Overpriced and Overrated – Horrible customer service, overpriced drinks and NO happy hour; you can walk down the street and get a domestic beer for 2.00 during Happy Hour, but at this fake irish pub they cahrge you 5.50 for a Miller, dang.

An Emerald Isle neighborhood bar in an Austin locale. – In Short
County Meath natives John O'Brien and Mick Morris recreated an authentic Irish neighborhood experience. It's named after Morris' grandmother, who took care of her village's children in the early 1900s. Away from the bar bustle of Sixth and Fourth streets, this relaxed Irish pub attracts an older professional crowd. A full menu has Irish favorites like corned beef and cabbage, shepherd's pie and fish and chips. The bar is stocked with 16 drafts and bottled brews.

First Class – Great place to go hang out! Come often, get to know the regulars, enjoy the characters you will find, and have a great time! This is a pub, not a bar. To me this means you come here to have a good time and socialize. We share stories, we drink beer, we have a good time. If you are looking for a fine restaurant, this is not it. If you are loking for a college bar to party and get wasted, this is not it. If you are looking for a great place to go with friends and hang out, this is your place. By the way, the food is great, it's just that this is a pub, not sit down fine dining.

Don't even try on Tuesdays. – My friends and I used to be regulars because of the pub quiz. Now they're turning away regulars because they're letting people stake out all the tables hours before the game. Fine, they think it's worth more money to them not to give a damn about customers and just treat trivia night as a cash cow. Well, sorry, I'm not too broken up about it.

The food is mediocre and expensive ($7 for brie? what the hell?), the beer is overpriced and only a so-so selection of Irish beer, and the wait staff are all new and really rude. And the manager is a condescending schlub. I wouldn't go for any night except pub quiz, and now I won't go for that. Honestly, TGI Friday's is a better Irish pub experience. Try Fado or B.D. Riley's instead for a really good go at it.

Don't go on Tuesday – Overpriced and underflavored food. Some members of the waitstaff are rude and slow. Do not go to this bar on Tuesdays between 6 PM and 11 PM - you will not be able to sit down.

The bar hosts a pub quiz on Tuesday at 7:30. The quiz has a great emcee and is very entertaining, but the current management allows one person to reserve unlimited seats. This policy means that all the patio seating and most of the indoor seating even though 4 out of 5 seats are unoccupied - will already be reserved even an hour and a half before the quiz. After arriving early and not being able to find a table, despite dozens of seats sitting empty, my husband and I complained. Effectively, we were told by a waiter and then the manager that our business was not as important as that of people who had not yet arrived. You will be treated in a similar manner.

As an alternative, try B.D. Rileys or Fado. Both are downtown, host a pub quiz and have better food and service than this place.

great bar! – We had one night in Austin, and wanted to see 6th street- we started in mother egans, - staff John , casey and michael couldn't do enough for us, we got free shots for being from Donegal!!! Great music there on a Monday, we had delicious food and the best of craic. It's a lovely pub inside, gorgeous patio outside, nice stage and sound, great for a session. A lovely place to visit on 6th street, especially if you're irish.

Great Hamburger! – Fantastic burger. Get it with the saute'ed mushrooms and onions. Juicy!! Steamed veggies were great also.

Never Leaving – My friends and I started going to this pub last summer and haven't moved since. The beer is great, served perfectly cool and if that's not your taste they will make whatever you can come up with. The food is simply fantastic, I could subsist on the brie and soda bread happily. The staff is wonderful and as you keep on coming the make a point to know and remember you. We decided to have our wedding reception and Mick has been positively wonderful in making it a night to remember. The prices are not cheap but certainly not prohibitive, and we've never had to park over two blocks away. Overall an amazing experience.
