liked it so much, went twice in 1 day – My daughter and I were in Chicago for Pearl Jam and saw a picture of the frushi in a dining guide. It was close to our hotel so we went for breakfast. Yum! We had the Chai French Toast, perfectly grilled with a milky chai tea sauce, the pineapple omelet, large and fluffy, and an order of frushi. We love coconut rice, but never thought to pair it with fruit. We loved it! The staff was more than friendly and when we told them we would try to come back before we had to fly home, they seemed genuinely happy. We knew they closed at 3:00 so we got there at 2:40 thinking we'd have to get take out since they were closing soon. They said that it was not a problem. In fact a group of men came in right around 3:00 and they were welcomed and seated. We got the eggs benedict with basil hollandaise and the pancake flight, all very good. The prices were comparable to every other restaurant we went to while in Chicago, so no surprises there. Since we've been home, we've thought longingly of Orange and can't wait for the next trip to Chicago.
Nice Spot for Unique Breakfast – It's interesting to see such polarized reviews here. It seems that some are taking this place too seriously. The whole vibe felt like it is meant to be fun and light-hearted. If you prefer traditional, more basic breakfast fare, then by all means do not bother. If you get bored with eggs & bacon and want a fun change now & then, give it a try. I loved my flight of pancakes with an apple theme. My friend also loved his eggs benedict with basil hollandaise. We didn't try the fruishi - just doesn't sound good. We were there on a weekday mid-morning, and our service was fine.
Keep Walking – My friends and I go out to a new spot for breakfast every Sunday. This was next on our list and had decent reviews but was a huge dissapointment. Prices are ridiculous for the small portions and be prepared to sit on a make-shift wood box. I guess their going for eccentric, but they're pretty snooty about it. Menu even says that if you want to build your own omelet, go to someplace with "nugget" in the restaurant name. Options are limited and something like eggs, hashbrowns and toast is labeled "boring." The food was nothing special. I had eggs benedict and the canadian bacon was sinewy, the eggs were far to runny, and the sauce was sweet and with a ridiculously thick consistency. If you think you're too good for a normal breakfast menu, go here. But if you want something filling, well priced, and with better service, keep walking.
overrated. – The novelty of the frushi and the fresh squeezed juice are cute...but there was not much else to get me to come back for more.
I've been tasting all the brunch spots in chicago over the past few months and this one came highly recommended. I went, excited to see what all the fuss was about, and when we got there, the first thing that struck me was the decor. It seemed half-hearted: as though they bought the can of orange paint and a bushel of oranges and got just plain tuckered out after that.
The service was fine, nothing fancy and the food looked better than it tasted. Compared to the brunches i've had throughout the country, the food didn't hold up. The concept works, but they need to back it up a little more in the kitchen. My asparagus was old and stalky, the rest of the omelet was, well, just an omelet. the potatoes were good and well-seasoned. overall, it's not the magical brunch-time delight I was led to believe it was. the restaurant is serviceable, but i'm not as excited to go back over and over again.
A vile attempt at brunch – I've been to Orange (with a peel) only once, and I swore to myself that I would never go back, for any reason. I went with my mother, who wanted to go to a new place for brunch, where the menu was creative and unique. She got what she asked for, and for some reason, she liked it. I, on the other hand, may be a food traditionalist, but I don't approve of combinations that just don't go together, like fruit and rice, their special, which they call fruishi. The texture of the rice was poor and the fruit was small and sweet -- not what you want when you're eating rice. It was really gross. I remember I ordered the french toast, which is really rare for me considering I like it, but don't love it -- the choice a direct result from having a poorly thought out menu -- and it came with a balsamic drizzle on it. On French Toast. Clearly the person who created the menu has had severe issues with his palate, or perhaps he got in the "creative for the sake of creativity", regardless, he should not have been able to create a menu, or others should have tasted it before it was used. Remember that unique things are distinctive and individual, and usually catch on at some point, but there is a reason why no one else serves their food this way; it's an awful way to serve it.
One of my top 3 breakfast places in Chicago – This place was awesome for a relaxed weekend breakfast. They had a great gourmet selection of variations on typical breakfast food. The portions were good sized and the ingrediants were fresh and tasty. The prices were pretty fair as well. This is one of my favorite 3 breakfast places in Chicago for fresh, hip breakfast food. I had some of the irish cut oatmeal that is pan seared and baked. It was excellent. The orange coffee is totally unique, but very good. My wife had an omelet that was out of this world. If you're looking for some great variation on breakfast, this is your place.
Second Worst dining experience Ive ever had in Chicago – I'd heard that their Brunch was great so I decided to check it out with my parents who were in town for a visit. It took forever to get a waitress and when she finally came, she disappeared for another 15 min before coming back to take our order. The first dish I asked for, they were "out of it" and then the second choice as well! I had to get my third choice and my father his second - they were "out of" three dishes"?!? There was also no Decaf coffee for my mother. 20 min later the waitress arrived with two dishes and both were wrong. Not just a little wrong, but completely incorrect. My mother's order was never put in. When asked how long it would take to get the right order, she said about 30mins because of other orders in front of us (including my mother who they hadn't prepared ANYTHING for). Unbelievable.
On to the food - It wasn?t good. There seems to be a large contingent of people in this city who think that because the dishes are a little ?creative? and pricey, that they are something special. NOT TRUE!! I admire creativity, but when it doesn?t work, it shouldn?t be praised. I don?t care if your ingredients are a little uncommon and the combinations a little unusual, if the food isn?t good, it doesn?t matter. This is the only time in my life I?ve ever said to a waitress ?I am not paying for anything, I am walking out of here, this was terrible? and that?s exactly what we did. Even my parents, who are incredibly forgiving of poor service, agreed and followed suit. I can only think of 3 times in my life where I didn?t leave a tip for the server, this was probably the most deserved. We went up the street to a basic diner and got eggs, toast, and coffee for under $5 a person and it was 10 times better than any of the $15 ?creative? dishes at Orange.
Chances are if someone tells you how good this place is, they fancy themselves as sophisticated and adventurous for finding something a little different. Ignore them. Go somewhere else.
overrated food and poor customer service – My husband and I went here for brunch on a Saturday after looking forward to trying this highly praised restaurant for months and months. I ordered the green eggs and ham which was good, but oversalted and definitely not worth the excessive hype. My husband ordered the pancake flight but, because of a food allergy, asked that they not put the poppy seeds on top of one of the pancakes that was part of the special. This, apparently, was out of the question. Orange has a strict policy of not making any changes AT ALL to their dishes. Alternatively, he then asked if he could just get 2 of one of the other pancakes types. Also, totally out of the question.... We were explained that they were a very busy restaurant and could not possibly accomodate special requests. Well, isn't any successful restaurant busy? I had never eaten anywhere, at any price level, that wasn't at least willing to TRY and accomodate a food allergy and in this case it was as easy as not throwing a spoonful of poppy seeds on top. Needless to say, we will not be going back. Even if the food had been outstanding, which it was not, the rude attitude over a ridiculously easy request was enough to keep me away for good.
Great Omlettes and Oh! the Juice! – I have to start by saying I love diners of all kinds but mostly those of the 'dive' variety. That being said, I recommend Orange not b/c it's a dive but because it's got that dive friendliness with better food, service and Oh! the juice! I would try the apple-grape-strawberry or orange-pear combinations. Overall, great service good food and the chance to create your own juices make this a place to go for sure. Try to go in a group of 2 or 4?parties bigger than that may have to wait a while for a table.
Below average and unsophisticated. – I am an experienced bruncher, coming from New York, where brunching is an art form. After reading the reviews of this place (and seeing it among the top-rated brunch venues in Chicago here on Citysearch), I was eager to try, and I must say I was disappointed.
There was nothing precisely "bad" about anything I ordered, but I thought the food was unsophisticated and way too sweet. The hollandaise on my eggs benedict didn't have the slight lemony tanginess one expects from hollandaise, the side of potatoes that comes with it tasted like it should be a dessert (and needed a lot of salt), and the side of cinnamon pancakes we got to share tasted like a stale, store-bought America's Choice brand cinnamon bun masquerading as a small pile of the driest pancakes you have ever met. And I think I got a cavity from them too.
It was a juvenile brunch experience, from our server (who cheerfully offered us a flight of sixteen candy-flavored pancakes, from gummy bear to Jolly Rancher, um, what?) to the text on the menu (I hate menus that read like a not-funny-but-thinks-he's-funny person's blog, with chatty descriptions of each dish, like "Heya!!! Yer sure gonna love these here eggs, partner! Deeelish, I tell you!!"). The two redeeming factors were that it was reasonably priced and had a variety of fresh fruit juices. Still, I would not go back.
