Russian Roulette – Most of the haircuts I saw coming out of Olive were incredible. Unfortunately, I don't even KNOW how mine ended up so horrendous. The color I asked for (and showed! with pictures!) couldn't possibly be further from the color I got--I don't know how strawberry blonde translates to dark maroon, but apparently we don't all think this way. I came in wanting to get radiant and sun-wild for summer and ended up looking dark and depressing. There were communication problems with my stylist and he didn't seem to want to take much time to really figure out what I wanted. He was a sweet guy, but I could have done a much better job by myself with a $4.99 box dye and some Fiskers. However, the girl I went in with got one of the most stunning haircuts I've ever seen. I guess what I'd say is that I'd recommend this salon, but just be careful and make sure your stylist actually listens to you before he gives you $100 worth of "whoops!"
Loring Park salon and gallery offers cuts, color, dread perms, extensions and products including Phyto. – In Short
Olive Salon is the place to go to get outfitted with a hip new hairstyle. Unlike some salons that serve up attitude in spades, Olive is a refreshing antidote to the too-cool-for-school vibe. The stylists here are artists who want to ensure every customer ends up feeling like a work of art, whether they're veteran hair experimenters or traditional bob-lovers. In fact, it's hard to feel intimidated in these art-lined walls. And the prices are reasonable to boot. If you're looking for dreads, color, extensions or even an up-do, this salon and local-art gallery offers a unique look for you.
Very Very Very BEST to get a haircut! – I was tired of going to salons and paying $50+ for a haircut that was not straight or shorter than I had asked. Most of time, the hairstylist was too busy talking about herself to pay attention to the cut itself.... I was not finding the perfect hair salon that every girl needs. So when a coworker suggest I try Olive Salon, I thought, "why not?" That was in 2003, and I have been going there ever since. For the past 4 years, I have driven the 70 mile round trip drive, and would not go anywhere else! I have seen Jonica, Megan and Carolyn. They are all awesome, friendly, and definitely know what they are doing! The thing that I cannot believe is their great prices ~ and their service is so much better than anywhere else. The girls are so trendy, but not in a pretentious way. I always feel welcome there. Your search for the perfect haircut will end there.
More movement in my hair than it's seen in years. – On a recent vacation in Minneapolis, I decided to save a few bucks over my Palo Alto, CA, stylist and try a cut here (lower cost of living). Olive had really appealing/cute artwork on their website, so despite fears that my needs for a low-maintenance cut wouldn't fit in with the way-more-hip-than-me hair cuts featured on their website, I booked an appointment. When I got there, they were really nice, offered me something to drink, chatted with me about the extreme heat and humidity, etc. The stylists all had these really fun, indie-rock type haircuts. A woman with a super-hip short bright red haircut with bangs (think Thelma from Scooby-Doo but in the same color as Elmo) came in for a cut, and seemed to be a regular. Again...will my stylist be bored/offended by my request? But NO! Olives can do both! Super-hip to more conservative--I'm fairly certain we both left happy! Jonica gave me a great cut--now even freshly out of a ponytail (which normally makes me look gross) I look totally hot! With so much motion added to my regularly limp hair, I'm now spoiled & my normal stylist just won't do...Darn you Jonica and your awesome cutting skills.
Best Salon – I'm a picky hair person. I change salons the way Paris Hilton goes thru men. When I moved to Minnesota about a year ago, I thought I would have to go from salon to salon to find the perfect place.
Olive was my first stop, based on a review. Saw Carolyn (the owner) and I've never been anywhere else.
She is wonderful. I have awful hair and she's made me feel and look like a (or at least my hair) million bucks. Carolyn is great---we experimented with extensions, color, cut and everytime I walk out of the salon, I am happy.
I see a long-term relationship with Olive.
The only con is the extra-quick parking cops who are ready to ticket the second your meter expires.
Get hair only hot comic characters have – First off, first time going there a few weeks ago. I knew I wanted something different but I didn't want to go too drastic and shave my head again, especially since it took about two years to grow it out to a point where I felt gorgeous again. But I hadn't cut my hair in all that time, I was full of split ends and the un-even growth pattern that come with growing the hair all over your head from scratch. Not too mention i'm not too high-maintainence so my hair isn't peak condition but I don't dye or iron it to make worse either.
I had Carolyn, who I explained all this to. My basic needs were: low maintence, a cut that works with all wavy, curly or straight-ish hair (my hair varies on it's own), some face framing asymetric bangs, and I wanted to lose no more than 2 inches all around, spilt ends or not.
Not only was Carolyn an excellent conversationalist through out, she made me comfortable and calm (I was really nervous), she followed all my guidelines and made the cut absolutely gorgeous. My hair looks just as good each day, she sculpted my hair to give my curls back their life and my face no longer looks dragged. And the bangs, look great every day, and they have that bounce that you only see with anime cartoons or comic book characters. And she cut my hair to a new part so it looks fresher.
I gave Carolyn very little to work with, but with making a very minor changes I have a new, yet comfortable and familiar look. My hair looks healthier, my curls stay together more and I still do nothing more than wash, condition and blow-dry out the bangs.
Needless to say, I found my new salon. Customer service was friendly, respectful and great. The cut itself is better than I though it would be with me. The people have PERSONALITY. The price was not cheap but It's not at all expensive, worth every penny though. And I was given some samples of their great store product Phyto, even though I didn't make a purchase besides my cut.
You guys rock!
Amazining Staff, very creative! – They made my hair look so good and added a lot of funk to my boring self with being too crazy for my job. I found my new salon!
Outstanding customer service! – I was referred to Olive by a friend when I moved here in 2004, and I have not gone anywhere else since then. Everytime I arrive, I'm greeted at the door with a smile, and all the staff seem polite and courteous. I love that they have new art on the walls from local artists, and I've never gotten a bad cut/color. I would have no trouble reccommending this salon to friends!
Olive me – I've been going to Olive Salon for about a year. It's hard for me to chose what salon to go to when my mom is a salon owner and hair stylist in Cali, but once I started going to Olive I haven't stopped. I've had cuts, highlights and dying done. Only once was there a touch up needed and my stylist had no problem having me back for a free fix. They also carry a top-of-the-line hair product line called Phyto. Phyto is the best hair products you could choose from: all natural and extremely efficient. When I had purple highlights done and/or re-touched Phyto kept my color vibrant for weeks longer than if I had used another brand. Olive is just like any other respectable salon- if you visit a stylist more than once your price is lower than your initial visit. And one more thing, Sarah is awesome.
The service I have received has been very inconsistent. I live fairly close by so I have tried them out numerous times in the past 4 years. I would say that the service has been satisfactory one out of every five visits. It is so annoying paying a large fee for a highlight, only to realize when you return home that they didn't apply the color all the way to the top of the scalp, so your roots show immediately afterwards. I also have noticed that four out of five times the stylist has horrific breath, and three of five times their appearance leaves much to be desired. However I do love the fact that they do not use Aveda products. Aveda sucks, and I hate that so many salons in Minnesota use it because it originates from here.
