DuMont is a popular high-end comfort food restaurant in Williamsburg. It has a very good, but not great hamburger and some other B+ / A- dishes, all served in enjoyably rowdy surroundings and with the prototypical uneven Brooklyn service. It absolutely is what it is, and if you are cool with that you will have a great time there.

Walked in cranky, left absolutely giddy! – I was starving and cranky when I went here with my fiance...we're getting married in 8 days and nothing is going right, but we decided to treat ourselves because we had heard that the food was very good here and I am so glad we did! We sat at the bar because the tables seemed a little too crowded with laughing couples (lots of couples) and we were able to chat as though we were the only ones in the place. We ordered a duck confit salad to share and it was absolute perfection! I always order duck confit whenever it's on a menu because it's my favorite thing. I had a glass of white burgundy and it was also perfect and smooth. I ordered the ricotta ravioli special, which was in a creamy, fresh broth with fresh sage and tarragon and tomatoes - it was a small portion but extremely satisfying nonetheless. He had the skate (which is usually hit-or-miss) but it was fresh and had the most perfect crust on it and came with a mound of perfect mashed potatoes and whole, roasted garlic cloves, which I soon attacked. We left there incredibly happy and as a result, the rest of our night went swimmingly well -wink wink.

LAUGHABLE SERVICE; WORST IN THE CITY – THE SERVICE IS SHOCKINGLY BAD. YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE IN A BAD "SNL" SKETCH.

WILL SOMEONE PLEASE TELL THE OWNER OF DUMONT, IF HE'S LISTENING, THAT HE NEEDS AND HAS NEEDED FOR QUITE SOME TIME, A MAJOR STAFF OVERHAUL? EVERYONE, PARTICULARLY THE WAITOR BY THE NAME OF NICHOLAS, ACTS AS THOUGH THEY ARE TOO GOOD TO BE THERE. THEY NEVER CHECK TO SEE HOW EVERYTHING IS, AND WHEN YOU HAIL THEM, THEY GIVE AN ATTITUDE AS IF YOU'RE DISTURBING SOME "ARTISTS MOMENT" THEY WERE HAVING.

NOBOBODY CARES ABOUT THE FACT THAT YOU'RE REALLY "TOO GOOD" FOR THIS JOB OR WHATEVER ELSE YOUTELL YOURSELVES BEFORE YOU GO TO BED AT NIGHT. WE ARE ALL ARTISTS IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD. AND WE ALL FIND WAYS OF GETTING BY. IN THE MEANTIME, JUST DO YOUR JOB.

OBVIOUSLY I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT FEELS THIS WAY. LOOK AT MOST OF THE REVIEWS. THIS MUST BE ONE OF THE ALL TIME WORST OWNERS/MANAGERS IN THE HISTORY OF RESTAURANTS.

BOYCOTT DUMONT/DUMONT BURGER/DRESSLER...UNTILE HE FINDS REAL WAITORS, (NOT THE MORONS CURRENTLY STAFFED), FOR DUMONT.

Horrible service + only okay food = crappy, costly food experience – There were four tables in our general vicinity and each one had complaints, be it hairs in the food, extremely slow service, or a general "eff you" attitude from the staff. I gave this place a second chance after an initial bad experience, and now I've convinced myself that I won't be heading back to Dumont, or any of its affiliates (Dumont Burger, Dressler).

An hour went by between our appetizers and meal, which finally came out 15 minutes after we tried to cut our losses and ask for our check. I was told, "Sometimes it takes a long time to cook a hamburger."

.... a hamburger? Really?

Considering it was raw when it finally got to me, I'm guessing that that wasn't the holdup.

The waitress insisted that she'd get the manager (she never did), and then said that the drinks would be taken off the check (they weren't).

Meanwhile, the girl sitting next to us left before her main course even came.

Also, and not to pile on, but the first time I went, I ordered the crab cakes and asked if there was cilantro in the salsa verdi, and the waitress said there wasn't... Of course, the crab cake was sitting on a pool of cilantro sauce. Not to sound petty, but don't say a dish doesn't have an ingredient if you don't know.

Avoid the headaches. This place isn't worth it. There are too many better options in Williamsburg to waste the time or money at Dumont.

heinous service. – My brunch today at DuMont had to be one of the most annoying restaurant experiences ever. We visited the restaurant after the brunch rush to avoid a long wait, there were several open tables in the front of the restaurant. We ordered coffee at the same time we were offered water. Apparently this was too much to handle, when ten minutes later our waitress came back and asked if we wanted anything to drink. We again ordered coffee. 20 minutes goes by and our waitress comes to take our order, we place our food order and ask again for coffee. Our waitress was one of those really irrritating professional eyecontact avoiders. She shuffled around staring at the floor, making sure no one could catch her eye if they were waving both arms in the air. Finally the coffee arrived. We wait. The three tables who arrived during our first waiting marathon were served their food. We Ordered an omlette and poached eggs, nothing that takes too long, or has to be cooked to temperature. Eventually, 45 minutes after we sat, a friend sat down at a table near by, we chatted and the four of them placed thair order. Some inumerable ammount of time goes by as I try to catch the attention of our waitress. My friends table gets thier food. Just when I'm about to start eating her food, ours arrives, no joke, 90 minutes after we sat down in a half empty restaurant. Not only would the waitress not visit our table once our food started to take an insane ammount of time, no one mentioned it, or updated us or anything. It wouldn't have been so bad if a manager came over and said the kitchen mixed up our food it would be right out or something, but just sitting there waiting, being ignored is SO annoying. Eventually the waitress came by and poured tea in our coffee and into all the coffee's of my friends at the next table.

The last time I went to DuMont they wouldn't let me sit at a table for two til my guest arrived at 5:30 pm on a Tuesday in a completely empty diningroom. I'm done with Dumont.

to do dumont or... well do dumont – my favorite things were your steak with peppercorn sauce or the brunch. both are unbelievable. Also appetizers are delicious. The garden is nice and whenever I go here I cant stop drinking the coffe. Dumont always puts me in a good mood.

Amazing Food and Good Service! – Honestly, I've read a lot of complaints about DuMont's poor service, and I don't know if the restaurant has taken it to heart or if I'm just lucky, but I have consistently received exemplary service here! The wait staff has been quick, attentive and friendly. I try to avoid the busiest times, but even brunch on the weekends has been great. Yes, there's a bit of a wait then, but we don't mind waiting at the bar. This is a terrible place for groups larger than 4 people. The food is so good I keep going thinking I'll have their famed burgers but once there, the specials always look so delicious I get them instead (wild mushroom ravioli in a walnut/butternut squash sauce, hanger steak sandwich). I have never eaten a bad meal here and I've never been unhappy with the service.

I Wish I Could Keep it a Secret! – Brunch is always pleasant on the weekend, but I love having dinner at DuMont. I've been a devoted patron for years now, and it's one of those places that excels at every entree, bar none. They're known for their reliable DuMont Burger and their wonderfully sinful DuMac and Cheese, but their specials are moan-worthy. From braised short ribs as tender as a cloud, to lamb shank even more delightful, to wild mushroom raviolo bursting with flavor, to desserts that defy you to leave behind one crumb. It can get crowded indoors during the colder months, but when the garden is open, it's a lot nicer. I love the garden in the summer; they've done a great job of weather-proofing it. The earlier you get there, the better chance you have of not waiting too long for a good table. They don't take reservations and they won't seat incomplete parties.

Just remember: They don't need your business – There are a lot of reasons why dining at Dumont can be a problem: the restaurant is relatively small; it is one of only a few restaurants serving its style of food in its immediate neighborhood; everyone and their girlfriend, visiting mother, co-workers, and roommate is trying to get a table; and they don't take reservations. The food, though tending to the slightly-too-salty, is good, simple, and fresh, however, and is always welcome after the inevitable wait for a table here.

Having conceded these points, the service could be a lot better. I went recently with a group of six others on a Sunday night. We knew that we'd have to wait since Dumont doesn't take reservations, so we accepted the hostess' invitation to camp out in the bar and have some drinks. She had told us that we'd be seated in about 20-30 minutes. After 20 minutes, I went to survey the state of the dining room and politely check in with her. She informed me -- suprise! -- that there was a group of six ahead of us that hadn't been seated yet. I asked her how long she thought our group would have to wait so we could make a decision about waiting or going somewhere else. The hostess insisted we stay and that it would be very soon until we were seated.

After another 20 minutes of waiting, we decided that we'd rather move on and try someplace less crowded. No hard feelings -- I know that we had a large table and frankly we were a bit dumb to have thought we'd be seated in under an hour at this place on a weekend. A guy in our group went up to the hostess to let her know we were leaving so she could take us off the list, and she gave us the death stare, I swear! She looked right at me and said, "I told you it would be soon. You should wait in the bar and I'll get you in a second." We figured this was more of a ploy to keep us drinking there than any sound advice and had a lovely (wait-free) evening at a nearby Italian restaurant.

This place makes me sad now. – It took me a long time to write this, but I'm only doing it because, well, I'm mad. I have been a huge fan of Dumont since it openned and have been here countless times. But I'm sad to report its on a downward spiral, and fast! I will blame all of this on the incompetent, lame, euro-wannabe, lazy, useless staff. I don't care how prententious you want your place to be - at least make sure your staff knows how to do their job (then maybe other things could be forgiven). I never feel welcome anymore. The bartender can't make a drink to save his life!! Dude!! He didn't even know the liquors - how embarassing. One time I was there for brunch and the waiter spilled coffee all over my friend and never offered a napkin or anything to help clean up. He had no clue and didn't even apologize. Guy, you are not that cool. Cool people know what's going on. Other times we've felt ignored by the waitress(es). Oh, the wine is wayyyyy too espensive for the quality or quantity. My burger always comes as well done even after asking for medium RARE. Every time. And I know how meat is supposed to be cooked. The wait is too long, too long too long. You finally get seated then you have to wait another hour to get your cold well done burger. I could go on and on. I am writing this to ask you to PLEASE fix up your act!! We do not want to loose this place - you've already lost too many knowing customers.

The garden! Best garden dining in BK! – Ok, I've read the reviews, and I'm very surprised. I've never noticed particularly mean service (and I'm really sensitive to service, as my review for the awful La Luncheonette in Chelsea shows). Maybe I haven't been in there on particularly high-traffic nights. I don't recall ever having to wait super long. The one time I did have to wait, we sat in the cute little bar "nook" down the hall near the bathrooms.

But what always wins me over is the garden. That's where I've eaten at least 3 items, and have always loved it. The last time I was there was in July of '06, and everything was just right. I had my usual entre -- Skate. Still delicious, still perfect. For drinks, I switched my regular white wine with the white wine sangria and had seconds!

I don't know...this place has satisfied me, and I am picky. It's a really nice menu, and perhaps they did raise their prices, but when you consider that Union Picnic up the street is charging "container fees" for delivery and take-out, Dumont's prices are not so bad.

I'd still recommend this restaurant, but again, go straight to the garden when it's nice out.
