Great place to kick back and have a drink – There aren't too many nice lounges in this neighborhood and this is definitely one of them. It's a good spot to kick back and have some tasty cocktails. I haven't eaten here, but I will try the food next time.
Great ambiance, amazing food, terrible service – I just had dinner here tonight. The place is absolutely beautiful and the food was amazing. Even though I was dining alone (and expected a tiny table in the back,) they gave me a larger table close to the jazz band which was really nice.
The menu offers an interesting, varied selection so rather than having an entree I option for two small plates... the smoked salmon platter and the truffle mac & cheese. Both were excellent, especially the mac & cheese!
Unfortunately my waitress really ruined the experience for me. I sat for almost 15 minutes before she acknowledged I was there and took my drink order (and the place was half empty so she was not busy). My mac & cheese came out in a reasonable time frame, but over 10 minutes later when she finally stopped by to ask me how I was doing, I asked about the salmon platter I had ordered and she looked surprised... apparently she had forgotten about it. She eventually brought it, it was good, all was well... until the check fiasco.
Since I'm staying at the hotel, I asked if I could charge the meal to my room and she said "of course, just put your room number on the receipt" so I did that and gave it back to her. I expected her to return with the second receipt for signature (so I could add the tip in) but she never did. I waiting another 15 minutes and finally got the attention of another waitstaff who brought the waitress over. Again, she looked confused and said "I gave you your receipt". I said "but what about your tip? The receipt you gave me was not the final version with room to add the tip". She was still confused. Perhaps she is accustomed to not receiving tips because her service is so bad?
I'm really surprised that a restaurant with such amazing food and decor could have such untrained staff, and plenty of them. At any given time there were at least 3-4 staff members standing around looking as if they were ready to attend to the diner's every needs, but none of them were actually doing anything. I hope that this was just an "off night" for the waitstaff because I'll be here the remainder of the week and I'd like to try eating at Opia again, but I'm not sure the nice ambiance and food are worth the lousy treatment.
A place to go – Belle expérience à Opia récemment avec de bons amis NewYorkais. Après un excellent coktail pris au Lounge, nous avons apprécié le dîner et le service attentionné et précis. Il paraît que le patron y donne parfois des concerts. Une bonne occasion d'y retourner pour écouter le French Crooner.
The Work – Just a great place to crash. I love the lounge. Seating is always easy, food / price is a a steal.
The owner Antoine is sure "The French Crooner" and lucky you if you get to hear him sing.
I got to be there on Monday night which is Jazz night. And being from Los Angeles, its just the best combination of good food, good ambiance, excellent entertainment and great service.
Anything more I said and you will start thinking I am getting a free meal from them ( which I should) :)
I strongly recommend it.

Something special – I love this place, when I come to the City for a business lunch, or a party with friends because it has got all you need speaking of food, ambiance, music, location and pretty women!
As a French resident I appreciate the world touch of the menu and the kindness of Antoine, when he is working, or playing piano!
Love the ambiance!! – I had made reservations for Opia about 3 days in advance for 4 colleagues and myself. We arrived promptly and were seated immediately. We were clearly being expected which made us feel important. We ordered drinks right away and our server was constantly checking on us. We ordered about 4 appetizers including the french sliders which were delicious, the tuna tasting which was by far my favorite, a basket of opia fries which were addicting!, and a salmon and creme fraiche flat bread which everyone enjoyed.. after eating we were happy to be able to step out onto one of the convenient balconies overlooking 57th and lex to have a smoke. We had a great time and were very pleased overall. Will definitely return.
Wonderful weekday spot for relaxing with some buddies – Last week on Wednesday night I called up a few of my buddies to see if anyone wanted to get together for some after work cocktails. We are all located close to uptown in the general vicinity of a lounge that I've been to before called Opia and recommended it to my friends.
I arrived around 6:30pm and asked the host for a table for 4 people in the lounge area for cocktails and was promptly seated in the comfortable banquets in the central lounge. My friends started filtering in around quarter to seven and we immediately dug into the lounge menu for some appetizers. In case anyone wants to know Opia has some great sushi and sashimi i.e. highly recommended are the Opia roll and the Dragon roll!! Our waitress and management checked on us regularly to make sure the accommodations were appropriate.
Around half past seven more of our friends started to join us and I suddenly realized that our group wouldn't be able to fit at the table. Four quickly became eight and I had to grab the host to see if we could expand only to realize the room was already full! The manager came over within minutes and asked us if we could wait for another table and I said "No Problem." I took maybe seven or eight minutes but eventually another couple left and the staff promptly cleared the table and added it to ours.
Overall the place is impressive with its renovations. The bathrooms are back on the second floor since the last time I've been there and the new Opia is fantastic, great new look! The staff is attentive, the food is great and I took a peak at the menu for Andre the restaurant inside of Opia and it looks enticing. Think I'll stop by and give it a try with a date maybe.
All in all if you want to try Opia out I recommend getting a reservation for any type of larger party just so you can be as comfortable as possible. The music and atmosphere are excellent and the staff will make sure that everything is possible!!! Congrats Guys and Girls at Opia and welcome back!!!!
TERRIBLE SERVICE – I registered with citysearch to write this review. That's how mad I am about my experience. It's my first, and probably only one.
I went with a group of work people. We had some drinks and shared a few apps. Keep in mind this was a work happy hour so we didn't get wasted. They charged many more drinks and apps to our bill. The drinks we let slide since we were a group of 5 and I couldn't be sure who drank what. BUT they charged extra food to our tab. They charged us for apps we hadn't even ordered. I spoke to the waitress and she would not believe me. Her attitude was unbelievable. I was truly astonished at her "customer service". Not wanting to sit there and argue, I agreed to pay the bill but requested to speak to the manager to give my two cents. Manager came over and told me he did not believe me but would take items off the tab. Again, I was astonished at his "customer service". Next day, I checked my credit card and although they had agreed to take items off the bill and the receipt I had signed showed me so..they charged the entire amount PLUS 20% gratuity to my card. I will never return.
In a word, laughable – My friends and I decided to try this newly-revamped bistro since we had a coupon. It was a lovely 2nd-floor walk-up overlooking 57th street..... which belied the absurdly poor experience we had there, despite the deep discount. I honestly felt terrible for our waiter who, though nervous and forgetful, was obviously trying his best under terrible circumstances. I have organized my grievances by category :
- Disorganized. After ordering our drinks once and being told they were out of each, we tried again only to be told we had the wrong menus (our drinks were thankfully on the house after the whole fiasco). There were not enough bread plates, we ordered fried calamari only to have it served steamed and our meals were brought out at the wrong time.
- Ambiance? I really don't know what this place is trying to be. There is a bar/lounge section that feeds into a corner dining room, but each is as loud as the other. Music ranged from ambient noise to classic rock and from inaudible to deafeningly loud. Oh, and then there was the Moroccan music...for the belly dancer...cause why not?
- The food. From the flavorless dipping oil for the bread to the shredded lettuce that comprised the large part of my "shrimp" salad (I got three shrimp, which they made sure to advise me was a courtesy since they usually only serve two (?!?!)) to the lazy, bland, smoked salmon-topped flatbread, this was a near complete fail. The sole redeeming quality was the dessert, which is the only thing I would recommend this place for. The profiteroles and apple tart were commendable and they served us an almond extract-infused plum dessert wine au gratis.
- The patrons. So loud, so drunk. At 7:30. On a Wednesday. Woof.
- Accommodations. There is no bathroom. For serious. I guess they can get away with it because there is one upstairs in the hotel (Hotel 57) they share this part of the building with, but I'm reasonably sure this is not legal. So, you take the elevator up there and arrive in what appears to be an office. But also a hotel? With one bathroom that doesn't open and another around the bend at the end of the hall? That you only got to cause the custodian in the elevator was kind enough to guide you to it? And it is a single room with a glass-doored shower? Cause all this is a smart idea when you consistently have highly-inebriated customers? I quite literally knocked into the glass shower door because I was laughing so hard at the absurdity of the situation.
All in all, a complete waste of time and money except for the stories I will get to recount for the foreseeable future. Verdict: go there for dessert and an apertif if you are in a rowdy mood. Avoid like the swine flu otherwise.
