Not veggie-friendly. – I ordered "Vegetables in a peanut sauce served with a choice of rice or couscous -with tofu $8.50." What arrived was a mound of dry couscous and a pile of gummy tofu SMOTHERED in peanut sauce with (I counted) FOUR mushy baby carrots that had long since met a sad fate. My boyfriend took pity on me and gave me a single cucumber slice and a single plantain slice from his plate. If the dish is stated to be VEGETABLES, how about putting some VEGETABLES in it?
Take a trip! – Cant afford a vacation? Just visit this great exotic spot and you'll feel a million miles away. Food is interesting, not exceptional, but tasty. Service was average nothing special, but we never felt totally forgotten. The place has a sub tropical simplistic element that envelopes you to a point you almost can't have a bad time. The wait can be long, the place is small and people love it, what can you expect. Great cocktails and enough sexy accents to keep your eyes batting all night
We Were Treated Like Dung – I've been to Bissap Baobabs three times. The service has always been rotten. But upon this last time, I vow never to return. We made reservations for 12 people for my 30th birthday. We ended up waiting over an hour, during which time the owner treated us like annoying popup ads. After being totally humiliated in front of friends, we decided to go next door to Cha Cha Chas.
Many of our friends have had the same experience at Baobabs. Word of advice: Don't go. It's a maddening experience. Decent food, cool drinks, and a good amiance don't make up for being treated like a slab of meat at a vegetarian convention.
Overall experience was just "so-so" – Went there 2 months ago. Decent atmosphere. The food was good but not good enough to compensate for the terrible service. It took over 45 minutes WITH reservations to be seated. Granted it was very busy, but the person waiting on us was VERY unattentive. (Never once checked on our party of 6, other than bringing us the food and our check) We were there for over 2 hours! And as I said, the food was good but not worth the 2+ hours spent there. ( i was expecting it to be "great" of "amazing" to compensate for the overall experience) However, the only positive thing about our experience there was a cute bartender who sent over a cocktail to my sister (the birthday girl) on the house.
Going back again and again and.... – The food is delicious and cheap. The waiters are fast. The drinks are strong. Enough said.
A Memorable Surprise – I began the planning for a surprise birthday dinner party for my brother and Bissap Baobab immediately sprang to mind. I have eaten there numerous times and they consistently deliver a superior product on all fronts--ambiance, service, food & price. And last night was no exception. From the reservation, onwards, everyone was polite, kind and generous. The waiter who took our order was patient and attentive. I highly recommend the house cocktails, Flamboyant is my favorite. This is definitely the perfect restaurant for big groups--but remember to make a reservation well in advance and then confirm it closer to the date, because they always seem to be busy. Thanks Bissap Baobab for helping to make my brother's birthday a very happy memory.
Good food! Long wait! – The long wait was worth it. However, it must be said that once we were seated, the food arrived very promptly (within a few minutes of ordering). I sampled 4 out of the 5 vegetarian dishes they had, and they were all very good!
Oishii food & good ambiance – I came here with a group of friends and it was a great experience. The interior decor looked authentic as was the food. I ordered the Yapou Khar (tender lam w/veggie) and it was delicious. It's a lively place so shouting across the 4-seated table was necessary to communicate. The restaurant was a bit small and navigating through in a w/c was difficult.
Great food, poor service – The dishes here are outstanding -- my favorites are the yassa (fish in a lemon-mustard sauce with onions and cous cous) and the fried plantains. Plus, the house cocktails are only $5 and really strong -- try the ginger margarita. But service is incredibly slow and lackluster. We waited 20 minutes for our waitress to take our drink order, another 20 for the drinks to arrive, then we had to flag her down to place our food orders. After 40 minutes I stopped the manager and asked if he could check on our food. He was really nice and apologetic and brought us complimentary friend plantains. We definitely appreciated that, but it would've been nice if our waitress even pretended to care about taking care of our table. I'll definitely go back for the food, but not when I'm famished. It just takes too long.
Hot Spot – Great Food, wonderful ambience, and very friendly service. The drinks and food are original and very good.
