Do Not Go Here – There is nothing special about this food. Even simple things like fried food gets messed up and is either under or over cooked. They do not cater to their customers whatsoever. They rarely make substitutions, there is an upcharge for everything and their sodas do not get free refills. Actually any beverage besides cocktails and beer are NOT even listed on any of the menus. Some of the wait staff are nice, but some are rude, dressed inappropriately and do not really give two cents about customers nor their fellow employees. The establishment in itself is dirty and poorly taken care of. Yes it is a historic building, but that doesn't give you an excuse to have water leaking from the ceiling or to have shelves that are falling apart/off the wall.
The so called manager and owner of this place are really unprofessional. They often attempt maintainence on something while the bar or restaurant has customers, which I find to be extremely rude. The manager, who is there every night, dresses unprofessionally and is often found hogging the Jutebox with the same music that he plays almost every night too loudly. This manager is also very rude to most customers and to his staff. You can often hear his arguments with the kitchen staff and his waitresses that often occur in the entrance.
I think that this place does not even deserve a one star rating. My advice is to go next door to Q.
Truly poor Service – The servers here take the restaurant's name to heart. It took more than 10 minutes after ordering to get drinks, and more than 1/2 hour to get the food. I regret wasting time and money here, and I certainly wouldn't go back.
Worst service EVER! – We decided to stop for dinner after a long day of shopping. We sat upstairs by a window where we were able to view lots of fun foot traffic.
-Waitress greet time 15 minutes
She approached us very kindly and took our order.
Hot roast beef sandwich with horse radish on the side (Main)
1-Caesar salad (Main)
2-Lobster bisque (appetizer)
All of our food came out at the same time instead of consecutive flow as requested.
Time it took to get our food ? 30 minutes
The hot roast beef was COLD and the horse radish did not come out with the sandwich. When I asked the waitress about it, she said that it was put on already. Clearly there was not any on the sandwich. Twenty minutes later when she decided to come back to ask us how things were, I told her that there was no HR on the sandwich. She said she would get some for me. She came back 20 minutes later with an excuse that she was busy. I had already finished my meal and did not need it anymore. Note that it was a slow Sunday with 5 tables and 2 waiters. She even had the nerve to charge me the extra .50 cents for it. The Lobster bisque we though was very good but everything else was average.
When all said and done, the food was not very good, the service was poor and the atmosphere was par.
This place truly lives up to it?s name.
LOVE THIS PLACE – Best little bar to hang out in after work. We have been going for Happy Hour for months now and always have a great time. It has a real friendly atmosphere and the jukebox has incredible music choices. The beers are reasonably priced and if you get hungry, there are a lot of awesome snacks/food to choose from. I would highly recommend trying this place if you're looking for a nice spot to hang. It's never over crowded, you don't have to scream to be heard and it's in a great spot for people watching...
Inconsistant (great bartender, not so great everywhere else) – I went "R. Ralph's" on tuesday night after seeing a movie to get a couple drinks. The bar was kind of busy for a while. Service at the bar was good. (Female bartender, light brown or blond hair.) The bartender never had me waiting for a refill and seemed to be on top of everything. She was friendly but never pushy or flirty/skanky. However I can not say the same about the man who seemed to be the manager. He ignored most of the customers and seem preoccupied flirting and harassing the bartender and the rest of the female staff. Not only was in pathetic and embarrassing, but entirely unprofessional.
I did not order any food, so I can't comment on selection or quality, but the drinks were good, fairly priced and the bartender was great.
Avoid at all times – This is a cool looking little bar in Old City Philly, and conveniantly located near all the great historic stuff, but what a horrible place to eat. We too sat at the bar where we also received horrible service from a bartender that tossed and flipped her long hair over everything and spent more time talking to a couple of people that seemed like friends who periodically helped themselves to behind the bar. If you like when you get a beer that is three quarters beer and one quarter foam, or when the employees act like they don't hear you everytime you say something, then this is the place for you. If you try and ask why there is so much foam in your six dollar beer, you don't get any sympathy or a slight refill from the bartender or "hairtender" as I call her, what you do get is this for a response, "oh, it always does that when we open." I don't care if it does that, give me a full beer! I have never been to a place that I had to actually request a full beer before, which I did on my second beer. The food was awful, and the place was not clean. Maybe the restaurant part is better, but I will never know, because I will never go back. The best part about the experience was watching the Redskins beat the Eagles, but that's about it.
The worst service I've ever received at a bar – I would not recommend this bar to anyone! Two friends and I happened in late one Monday night. When we got there me and one of my friends ordered our beers while my other friend sat undecided. The bartender was not in the least bit friendly. When my friend finally decided on a club soda the bartender rolled her eyes as if the drink was a waste of her time. The 3 of us sat around drinking for a while. Then at about 2:40 the bartender gave last call. I ordered one last beer. Within 3 minutes of receiving my beer the lights were flicked on and a man began shouting "drink up and get out!" He was extremely rude and quite intimidating. "Drink up and get out! Drink up and get out!" He shouted it over and over. Then he approached a group of people (the only other people in the bar at that point) and told them they needed to get out. They did. He then worked his way around the bar and told us to do the same. I told him I was going to finish my beer that I had received only a few minutes prior. He continued to shout at us that we needed to leave insisting that "this is the bar business and this is how it's done." When we told him that his shouting at us was not a very good way to get customers he replied that he didn't care and he didn't need new customers. Thus, I felt like I should let everyone know that they don't want our patronship over at Ralph's. At one point he even told us that if we did not leave he would "throw us out." He was a large, menacing man threatening 3 young women. It was completely inappropriate. We were not poor customers. It was a good 10 minutes before actual closing time and we had already closed out our check and left the bartender a large tip that she absolutely did not deserve. We would have left quietly within 5 minutes if he had not begun harassing us. We left feeling intimidated and angry. There are way too many good pubs out there for anyone to waste his/her time in a place that's run by people who treat their customers so horribly!
Nice spot – My boyfriend and I were walking around on Sunday. We were trying to find a no fuss place to stop in and grab bite. We stumbled upon Ralph's for dinner. We ate upstairs by the window overlooking the street, it was great people watching, even though foot traffic was relatively light. The waitress was very friendly, however the service was quite slow for it just being the two of us in there. I had the burger which was requested medium rare and it came out well. My boyfriend raved about the pulled pork sandwich and the appetizer combo was deep fried which is always tasty, but DEFINATELY NOT a healthy choice. It's a cute place to go if it's not rushing to be anywhere, the food is mediocre, but it's not going to cost you an arm or a leg either. You decide.
BJ Heaven – Saw the coked up black "manager" and a guy in the bathroom for about an hour together. If this is classy gay bar I'm Fred Astaire. Gross
IN THE MIDDLE OF IT ALL – Want a friendly place to go in Old City that won't rip a hole in your account? There's ROTTEN RALPH's. Good food, drink and service awaits those at this affordable, cozy and jovial corner spot. Upstairs, a more serene and quiet dining room with a wood-burning stove, warms in the winter months. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
