Though no longer 'under the stars' this company is still where American musical theater stays alive in Houston. – The Skinny
With nationally known leads, and more important, homegrown rank and file, TUTS has come a long way from its nights "under the stars" at Miller Outdoor Theatre. TUTS' reputation both for staging original works ("Beauty and the Beast" and "Phantom") and revivals ("My Fair Lady" and "Crazy for You") bring in audiences by the bucketful. A good deal of Houston's cultural collateral stems from artistic director Frank Young's near-Broadway quality productions, and it is not unusual to see three generations of audiences troop to see productions.
The city liked the company enough to approve demolishing the Music Hall and the Coliseum, clearing the way for a theater that has plenty of room for hydraulic lifts and superior acoustics. The 1997 season marked TUTS' last year in the Music Hall, and construction on the new $71 million building began in the summer of 1998.
