Upscale Italian attracts a sophisticated crowd to this roomy Lincoln Park spot. – The Scene
Candlelight softens the yellow-gold walls of Merlo's spacious, open dining room, which is decorated with a hodgepodge of rustic figurines, wreaths, and mounted fashion photos. Chatting groups of 40-something Lincoln Parkers keep the energy level--and noise level--up. The front bar area is a cozier, tighter space, with window seats looking out onto Lincoln Ave.
Expect sizable portions of authentic Italian fare. Start with fritto misto, a platter of shrimp, scallops, calamari and veggies kissed with a light batter and a squeeze of lemon. Artichoke tort is a heartier option, rich with garlic, parsley, mortadella and parmesan. Entrees include meat and fish dishes, like veal shank with spinach and halibut on saffron cream. But don't miss out on pastas: Risotto of the day might feature ripe shards of asparagus buried in creamy rice; hand-rolled tagliatelle, light as air, paired with dark, earthy mushrooms. For dessert, panna cotta garnished with caramel sauce and strawberries is simple and delicious.
Longing for Italy? – If you have been to Italy and are longing for true Italian food and to some extent atomosphere, Merlo is the place to find it. The food is as close to the real thing as you will find in Chicago. Light as a feather handmade pasta, simple yet delicious meats. The tagliolini with rabbit ragu is as close to Tuscany as you can find. A little noisy, it made it hard to hear the waiter at a table for 5, but service was very good. If you wonder what all the fuss is about when it comes to Italian food, try this place!!!
