Best fish tacos ever! – The beef brisket enchiladas and the beef brisket tacos are great, but the fish tacos are FABULOUS!!!
Worst service in town, El taco Veloz is better – If you are looking to be treated badly, this is the resturant for you. The food is pretty good, but the horrible, rude service far outweighs any benefits. I have tried all the locations with the same outcome.
El Taco Veloz has better more authentic food and great service.
I would not waste my time or money on this resturant which prides itself on hiring only sarcastic, unhelpful wait staff who seem to be there only to enforce the 97 unwritten "rules" they have for customers, which include, you may not sit down until your entire party has ordered, even if the restaurant is empty or you have 15 people.
You also may not ask any questions about the menu without getting sarcastic and rude responses. e.g. "Are the beans spicy?" Response from the cashier., "This is a Mexican resturant, all our food is spicy, if you do not want spicy, you should not eat here." (BTW... the beans were not remotely spicy despite rude cashiers response.)
Can't get around the Quirks – The food is better than Moe's, Willies and most strip-mall type Mexican restaurants. I tried to make Taqueria a favorite restaurant of mine, but with each visit Taqueria became more and more a place that I disliked. Whether its getting items to go, or dinning in, all my attempts to get around Taqueria's shortcomings, well, fail short. Attempt #1 - Timing my visit when the lines are short. That just didn't happen! Attempt #2 Only get orders to go... well that still required that I wait in line for an hour. And after enduring the hour long waits, and having no place to stand while waiting on my food to be brought out - that plan was moth-balled. Attempt #3 Only go in groups... having friends to talk to would make the line wait shorter and provide "defense in numbers" against the sometimes notoriously rude staff. I never seemed to be able to round-up a group whiling to go. I think that Taqueria should change their system in some type of sensible way. Excluding the bar area, currently Taqueria has only one person taking all guest orders, that same person handles all payments and dispensing drink cups. This causes the bottle neck which leads to the lines, which I personally think Taqueria uses as advertisement (passers-by see a long line of people naturally think somethin' must be good over there). I wonder if staffing up the kitchen to allow for two or three additional order/registers and somehow allow for phone-in ToGo ordering would help? I've noticed that the gap in time between my visits is getting greater and greater after each visit. I can't seem to get around the quirks.
Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport opens a Taco Stand – Over Rated! Is how I'd describe this place to a friend. I visited TDS based on word of mouth from people in my office. I had the fish tacos, and my date had the chicken tacos. The food was okay, but we both left with the feeling "what is all the hype about". The food was okay, just okay. Now as it relates to everything else... oh my god! I felt like I was at Atlanta's Hartsfield/Jackson Airport! Looong lines, Workers with attitude ready to pounce if you break rules that you may or may not be aware of.... I can't see myself frequenting TDS... its just too much to go through for okay food.
Decatur's Hotspot for Jogger Strollers – Like other posters have said, your trip to Taqueria del Sol will start with an approx. 45 min wait in line to order from the one counter person as myriad militant staff stand around the restaurant doing nothing but folding their arms and glaring at you. Once you've been sneezed on, tripped over, and been deafened by screaming children, you will then finally have the opportunity to order. And oh, you think, these freaking tacos must really be worth it! When they finally arrive at a cafeteria-style table you've finally been allowed to sit at (ubiquitous screaming, running children still making you want to cut out your reproductive organs with one of Taqueria del Sol's dirty butter knives) you bite into the dry, chewy, flavorless pap, with sides that actually taste as if the word SYSCO is stamped in your mouth. What an absolute waste of time, money, and patience.
Awesome Food if you like standing in line – This place is not about atmosphere or service - it's the food, stupid. If you choose to dine in, you will be sitting in a cacophonous wash of loud voices and children bleating. Which is not that awful if that's what you're in the mood for. Don't make it a first date spot. The food is consistently great and the prices can't be beat for the quality. You'd be making a mistake by choosing Moe's or Willy's over Taqueria. I usually prefer to get takeout and make the short drive home to enjoy the food. Unless you time it right, there is usually a long line to wait through to get to the order station, but it moves at an OK pace. The only thing I don't like about the place is the attitude of the management. They know that people will line up for them, so they act as if they don't really need you as a customer. They don't accept takeout orders over the phone, and there are a number of other rules the "cattle" that patronize the place must be aware of. But again, the food is worth it. If they slip in that area, they will have trouble retaining customers.
Awesome food but appalling lines – The food here really is superb - I recommend the shrimp and corn chowder, the fried chicken tacos and the fish tacos. Unfortunately, the waits and lines are appalling. I just read a review that talked about packing your "patients." Well, if you don't have lots of patience, you may end up a patient - in a psych facility. On Fri and Sat nights it's Yuppie central with lots of the hip crowd's precious little monsters running in and out the front doors and weaving their way between the long, long line of people waiting to order their food. If you can't catch this place when it's just opening for either lunch or dinner I recommend you try somewhere else. Decatur has so many great restaurants that don't require you to stand in line.
Pack Your Patients – Taqueria Del Sol has a limited menu, mostly tacos served with a variety of meat (chicken, Pork, fish, etc). A few chef specials are offered (and vary) per week. I found the fish, and fried chicken tacos the best. However, my total experience at Taqueria Del Sol was not pleasant and I will not be going back anytime soon. I thought by "packing my patients" , being familiar with the rules and long lines, would help me in handling the Taqueria Del Sol experience. I was wrong. I've never seen a restaurant employee be so rude/aggressive towards me in my adult life. There was a mix-up with 1 of the 10 items we ordered, resulting in the next table's salsa being brought to our table. A TDS employee comes out from the kitchen to our table and yells "You didn't pay for that salsa" then walks off (before we could determine the/his issue). WOW!!! I call the manager to the table, informed him of what just happened, and offered to pay for any misunderstanding (I'm looking to enjoy my meal not a negative ordeal). The manager offered to take the salsa away, or leave it at our table at no charge (there was no apology). The Floor Manager handled the situation fairly, but the worker's behavior is unacceptable. I too did not believe other reviewers when I read about issues they had with TDS's staff (feeling that surely there is a reasonable explination... right?) Well... now I know! I hope this review helps!
MMMMM. . . fish tacos! – I thought people were insane when they recommended this place because of their fish tacos. All it took was one taste! The food is phenomenal & the prices are very reasonable.
After reading some of the reviews below, I have to say I never even noticed the staff or encountered problems (and I've been there several times). Maybe it's because my first visit was with seasoned pros or that I'm always with a group of friends & pay no attention to the surroundings. Regardless, I always respond to my craving for fish tacos, cheese dip & shrimp chowder.
Love the food, get to know the staff – Like others on here, I too am a glutton for punishment, but it's the fish tacos that keep me coming back. And the nutty shrimp tacos and the scallops andhabenero cheese grits. Yes, you must wait in line, yes, you can only order 4 items to go from the bar, no, there are no high chairs or table service or ordering for someone else who hasn't arrived or table saving. With all these rules you wonder how a restaurant stays in business and why you keep coming back. In short, the food and the margaritas. Simple food, made well and cheap. Great place to bring kids, if you go early, before the rush, around 530pm, bring your stroller and own high chair, we bought one just for our trips to Taqueria. Get to know the staff, say hello to Mike and his daughter, who is often behind the bar, needless to say, a little kindness goes a long way! Yes, I've had my visits where I've sworn I'd never go back but everytime, it's a lie!
