Pretty Asian jackets share the glare of Chinatown spotlight with army of odd tchotchkes. – The Scene
When pigs fly--well, sometimes they do on Mott Street, where everything from Police Department shot glasses to pretty bedroom slippers are hocked alongside plastic pigs with mechanical fluttering wings. Only in Chinatown, where everything that could be for sale is right in front of you and the doors stay wide open in summer and winter alike. This chaotic vibe also lends itself to bargaining--give it a try.
This is democratic marketing at its finest, with embroidered T-shirts piled high next to elaborate swords, which perch hauntingly next to horribly tacky picture frames adorned with painted and raised (and out of date) skylines. There is absolutely no charm to the space itself, with harsh fluorescent lights and forgettable American pop music. Worth the trip, however, are the black velvet tunic jackets with embroidered sleeves and the reversible silk pajama tops in bold hues--a handsome alternative to the basic black blazer.
