takes me back to Austin...yum! – The original is in my former hometown of Austin, TX. It is the only place I can find in SLC that is anywhere near the delicious TexMex that I miss so much. Their queso and guacamole are delicious. Entrees are amazing. Their salsa is good but could be much hotter :) Service was superb. I will go back here whenever I get homesick. Check it out!

Great Margaritas (for Utah) – I agree with some of the other reviewers - the service is pretty good here, but it's still a restaurant in a mall. It looks, feels and tastes like a chain restaurant you would find in a mall. If that's what you're looking for, this is the place for you!

Ambiance aside, they have the best margaritas I've found in Salt Lake. That's the only reason I've found for dining here. It's best in the summer when you can sit on the "patio" (read mall walkway) - good people watching.

Pleasant, but average. – We had just walked about 200 yards in the wind and rain to find out that the sushi restaurant we had heard so much about was packed, with a 1.5 hour wait for a table. So, right across the way we spotted ZTejas. The fairly accurate prediction of a 20 minute wait by the host lifted our very cold, damp spirits. Our waiter, Jeremy, was just about perfect. Even his socially acceptable bantor was well timed. Touche' Jeremy! I recommend this restaurant on its service alone. The food, although prompt and well prepared, was rather bland. Even the "salsa" was so mild and sweet, it tasted more like tomato jelly with cilantro than salsa. Bottom line, the food was average. Not something I expected from such a limited menu with supposed specialties. Recommend they invest some time and money "spicing-up" the menu and giving Jeremy a raise.

Perfect for a pre-Delta Center meal – Nice interior, tables aren't to close together. We received very good service and the food was fresh, hot and yummy. My husband loved the dumpling appetizer, I didn't so much but I don't like pork sausage. He had Jambalaya and loved it. It was packed with chicken, sausage and shrimp. I had Crab Stuffed Chicken and it was really good too. Served w/excellent vegis and rice. We can't wait to go back and try something else. It's just a short walk over to the Delta Center. We had a wonderful evening.

Super Southwestern – Date of visit: 2/5/2005 @ 7pm. Wait was about 40 mins.

I had the gumbo and jumbalaya. The gumbo was a tad cool but tasted great. Z'Tejas didn't skimp on the portions of meat and chicken in the soup.

The jumbalaya was superb. It had just the right amount of spiciness. There were hearty portions of chicken and sausage and the whole entree tasted fresh.

My wife had the miso salmon. The salmon was flaky and tasted very fresh. The miso sauce was a nice accompanyment to the fist--not over-powering or distracting.

Our server was a little slow on refilling our water but outside of that the visit was great.

I'd rather eat here than at Happy Sumo – We were stuck waiting for Happy Sumo, with very little chance of ever getting in, so we decided to go across the way to Z Tejas. We were seated right away, no wait, and our server got our drinks right away. I was a little shocked that my martini was $7.50 for such a small serving, but the martini was good. Maybe I should have tried one of their regular cocktails which are cheaper. The cornbread was soooo good, and we'd barely started on our chips and dip when our entrees were served. From what I read in other people's reviews, maybe we just lucked out, but we were starving and Z'Tejas fulfilled our hunger pains right away.

Stranded – So, we were promptly seated. Never mind it took out waiter at least 10 minutes to come out. He offered a lame excuse, "They sent me looking for change." Like we cared. So, ready to order and he was semi-helpful. The food was excellent and a good value for the buck. Although, the inattentive waiter didn't bother with a special request. Where was he when our drinks ran dry? Never offered a box for some excellent take home treats. And, just about had to get up to run my own credit card. We'll be back because the food was great; service sucked!

Tex-Mex food with global influences served in a subtle Southwestern setting. – The Scene
Colors on the walls call to mind the Southwest. Even with country-western music playing in the background, Z'Tejas avoids an over-the-top display. The chain leans more toward understated Santa Fe and less in-your-face Texas.

The Food
Instead of the usual bread basket, hot cornbread arrives in a small cast-iron skillet. You'll see plenty of those skillets, transporting everything from sizzling shrimp and pork dumplings steamed in ginger-infused soy sauce to artery-clogging chili con queso. Crawfish crab cakes, loaded with big hunks of crab meat, are a good choice for a starter. Proceed directly to the catfish tacos--spicy seared fish paired with cool slaw and wrapped in warm flour tortillas. The decadent chicken relleno, drizzled with sour cream and green chili mole and sprinkled with toasted pumpkin seeds, is also worthwhile.

margaritas – By far the best margarita Utah has to offer. Tasty and within the legal confines of utahs screwed up liquor laws.

Wow and I mean it – My husband and I have now gone here a few times and both was a extrodinary experience. I highly recommend going outside of the "normal" tastes and trying either their chicken rellenos or the spinach chicken stack while reading the ingerdients leaves you wondering both are a pleasant blend of flavors. I also recommend there margaritas or flavored lemonades (Try the guava lemonade).

The seating leaves something to be desired since it is almost impossible to get a booth and you are always surrounded by kids if you can ignore that it is not so bad.
