Austin's quintessential greasy spoon recently moved into new digs, and while a few menu items are still working out some kinks, this hangover breakfast has remained steadfast: "The California." A humongous, delicious plate of mushrooms, cheese, spinach, onions, black olives and avocado hash browns and eggs. Split this with your favorite drinking buddy.

That was Chicken Pot Pie??????? – Sure wish I had read reviews before wasting $8.65 on food that I wouldn't have paid a dollar for had I known how unbelievably bad it was. Canned green beans with no seasoning. I'm not exaggerating. The "chicken pot pie" was made with stale, hard to cut bisquits, corn starch, shredded carrots, no peas, corn, red bell peppers, and garlic salt. And did I mention the corn starch? Only 5 minutes away is Boomerangs if you want really great chicken pot pie (which I think they call Meat and Veggie pies). Giving Austin Diner 1 star is being generous. No wonder the place was 80% empty at lunch time.

The only good reviews bout this place must've been employees – Terrible! I joined this site just so I could complain about this cheap place. I don't mean cheap menu items, you might as well cook at home from the 99 cent store...it would still be better. You can tell they cut all corners they can in their food quality & purchasing. My boyfriend lives walking distance from here. I would gladly walk out of the way entirely, just to avoid this place. I hope they go out of business & open a better joint up.

Beverages aren't great so stick to water. My boyfriend ordered a diet coke that was flat. My ice tea was just rank. No amount of sugar or ice could fix it.

As far as decor went, they were going for vintage but it looked like a filthy thrift store. You can tell by the menu they are aiming for that 50's american diner touch, but there is a mexican menu as well. I figured they didn't have the american thing down after my first failed order which tasted like crap. So i played it safe the next time & got chicken nachos. It looked like a child made them. Self serve glops of sour cream & guac...looked like turds on my nachos. Black, yet refried beans stuck to the plate with a mound of cheeseless nachos. But don't worry-plenty of onions. And strips of microwave chicken....yuck.

Their waffle was good. Bacon looked microwaved.

Hit & miss. But mostly miss.

Best Mexican Food In Austin – I am not form Austin and love Mexican food, this is the closest to authentic, had huge breakfast tacos with salsa that was Excellent, not hot, but full of flavor. I actuall keep asking my sister who lives in Austin to go back. I want to buy some of the Hot Sauce. This stuff could be bottled and sold!

Atmosphere comfy diner type. I even told my sister that tthe coffee was some of the best I had. I can't believe these negative reviews about the smell or the bad coffee. Very clean, excellent service, coffee, food! Can't wait to go back!!

BAD coffee – The food was adequate. I had the gingered pancakes which were actually very good, but my hubby's coffee was rancid. We changed it out twice to no avail. I wouldn't necessarily go back, this was just ok for me.

Completely Disgusting – This needs negative stars. Smells like death. Decorated like a Goodwill store, including the dust. Coffee that tastes like it came from an abandoned cabin. Maybe its the overiding stench of the place joining with the flavor. Meat generally tastes old, eggs: tasteless. Pancakes, dough-like. Prices: High. Freakin' ridiculous. Needs a Health Dept. visit and possibly a close down.

Tiny Little Maggots in my aj – They were small, maybe a millimeter. There was maybe 3 or 4 floating at the top, squiggling around.

This is NOT GOOD FOR BUSINESS. Where is HEALTH INSPECTION when you need them!?!?

dirty and salty but good service – My daughter and I went to the diner on Monday, the 5th of January at around 10am. Our server, Elisabeth was great. That was the only great part. The window sill of the booth we were sitting in was full of dead flies and dust. The entry to the bathroom was filthy. I ordered huevos rancheros. I have NEVER sent a plate of food back but the ranchero sauce was so salty I could not eat more that two bites. Elizabeth took it back a brought be migas which were good, but different than they used to be.

New cook? New management? I like the old better.

I hope our next visit is more successful or it will be our last.

Cool and comfortable, this is where to get a cheap, tasty breakfast. – In Short
Formerly Laura's Bluebonnet Kitchen, the Austin Diner has kept much of Laura's decorative charm, including the cool '50s dinette tables and chairs, retro appliances, and round porthole windows. Casual yet funky, the diner affords a delicious, inexpensive breakfast to the slacker crowd that stumbles in each morning. Jake's pancakes are whipped up with cottage cheese, making them fluffy and moist. The vegetable plate features a trio of chunky mashed potatoes, black-eyed peas and lima beans.
