tasty enough – I liked that this was a small, cute little place that was CLEAN. Most places in Austin attempt at the quaint little cafe that ends up feeling more like the dirty little whole in the wall. It might have been overpriced but the food was worth it.
Need more chefs – I got the oyster poboy, and it didn't live up to my expectations, but it was still good. I really love the oyster poboy at Drago's in New Orleans. I don't think there are enough people in the kitchen because it took over an hour to get my food out. Don't go there if you are pressed for time. Overrall, I would recommend the food here.
Fried catfish, French dips and other classic Big Easy cuisine in downtown Austin. – In Short
Gene's is a tiny storefront with a few small tables and spare New Orleans touches. An added porch takes spillover. While Gene cooks, his wife, Claudia, warmly attends to customers. Lunchtime waits are tolerable and worth it, but specials can run out. Simple New Orleans cuisine, like smoky red beans, hearty jambalaya, and hot and cold po'boys served on fresh French bread half loaves have many fans. Cornbread is baked on the premises, and greens are fresh.
Great food and Service – Very Friendly and make you feel extremely welcome. Would recommend to anyone. Great Poboys try the oyster or the hot sausage(which is like a hamburger) both are very good.
New Orleans Soul meets Austin – Great food and Great people. Awesome Poy Boys and great daily specials.
Now with more seating! – I hadn't been to Gene's in a while (shame on me) and was happy to see that they've added a second dining room -- muuuuch larger than the original seating area; I estimate about 12 additional tables. Over lunch, they had a blues guitarist playing nice, quiet music (completely easy to talk over), which added a lot to the already-comfortable ambiance. And the fried oysters are still amazing.
Awesome Cajun – After our local authentic cajun place closed down, i decided to give Genes a try. I had the tuesday special of the day which included jumbalaya, garlic bread, potato salad, green beans, and fried chicken wings for under 8.00 bucks. The food was really good, and plentiful. The tea is sweetened to perfection, and the owners are so nice. Parking can be cramped in the back, but i went during 11:00 am and only three cars were there.
MMMMMM!!!!!!!!!! – This is by far the best oyster poboy I have ever tasted. Very crispy, fresh, oysters on delicious lightly toasted french bread. The place is very small, and parking is limited, but I'd be willing to wait! The smoked sausage poboy was fragrant and delicious, and more than I could finish! These poboys are huge, and if I had known, I would have split one so I could try the red beans and rice. I really recommend Gene's if you want authentic New Orleans style poboys!
Reminds me of home – I love this place. In fact, I'm not sure I want everyone to know about it because then I wouldn't be able to get in there anymore. They have the best shrimp po-boys. I feel like I'm back in Fat City, New Orleans.
The Real Thing – This is the place for authentic New Orleans style poboys.
I've tried the hot roast beef, shrimp and catfish and no one in Austin does it better than Gene. His bread is perfect and so is everything else. It's close to downtown and there's always plenty of parking in the rear. The smothered chicken is pretty good, too.
