Neighborhoods: Echo Park, East LA
Although it may have a hipster reputation, it IS actually one of LA's cooler, slightly smaller music venues. A great place to discover up-and-coming bands that you might see at Coachella in a few years.
Yes, this place is known for its indie music scene, but look at the listings closely to discover other fun acts. I caught a sock puppet theater troupe recreating an episode of Three's Company onstage recently. That was hilarious. The Echoplex downstairs hosts The Moth storytelling finals each month, too.
Why the Echo? – I always heard that the Echo was a great place to relax and hear good music. But when I finally go there the music was bad, the atmosphere stale, parking a bitch, the brew selection pathetic, and I got kicked out at 9pm for a change of venues and would of had to pay ANOTHER covercharge to stay after hanging outside for half an hour. What a lame Saturday night.
Sparkle Motion – The Echo is a great place to see a show. The inside looks like some kind of indie senior prom, with the disco ball and what not. Drinks are decently priced and a lot of great bands come through there. Lots of friendly folks too. Go there. Now.
Echo Park hideaway puts a fresh and funky Eastside spin on the dance club genre. – Everybody knows there's a heavy hipster herd of artists, musicians, writers and the like residing on L.A.'s Eastside, namely Echo Park and Silver Lake. And it's also well known that, with this crowd, under-the-radar music is a must. And this cousin of the scene-making Spaceland is a great spot for new grooves. Located in a former Latin disco, the dusty floor, sticky vinyl booths and mirrored walls may resemble the interior of a seedy strip club, but this place is about fresh sounds, not fancy digs. Every DJ-oriented night is different, and offers a chance to see and hear groundbreaking styles and sounds before anyone else. There's a definite freestyle fellowship that extends from the DJs and performers to an audience comprised of b-boy cats and funky felines. This vibrant vibe creates an abstract ambience where anything can--and does--happen on the stage and the dance floor.
good good – Caught an amazing show at Echo recently and really enjoyed the venue size and feel. The dance floor is just big enough to allow for plenty of bodies, but not so sprawly that you're a mile back from the stage at any point. Echo also stays away from tacky chrome or a visual "theme" and opts for clean and simple, which means you have nothing distracting you from checking out the crowd in all their fancypants gear.
Bass Addict?....Get your fix here!!! – I haven't been out in a long time, but I must say that last night made up for it all..The Echo))))) Is off tha hook!! The music is magnetic, the eclectic crowd is fun and ready to join or cheer you on while you're gettin your groove on to the infectious music. The drinks are fairly priced or so I hope! The $20 cover was a bit much for me but it was worth every penny. It wasn't crowded.. So I must have picked a good time to go..Although I heard that it can get very crowded quickly.Parking was easy..there's a lot around that corner(and if you go on a night that Momma's working..say "Hello!" She's your security in the lot and a real cool lady)
dope spot – one of the best spots in l.a. for sure. an intimate venue with a big-enough dance-floor, big-enough lounge, and reasonably priced drinks. you'll get a mixed crew depending on what night you go, but you're guaranteed a good mix. the echo caters to all types of music, but is the only place in l.a. that'll host some experimental dance music/electronica...stuff you won't hear at vynyl and the likes.
you'll get the whole vladislav delay, golden boy, luomo type of scene in there and that's cool cos, outside of SF, NY, and Germany, there's not many other places nearby to see stuff like that.
excellent venue...get there early for parking.
POP'in FRESH – This place is dope. It has the perfect size dance floor, not too big or small. The lounge is not too big, to avoid lazy foos from sitting back chillin'. I went on Sunday and the crowd was dope. Fooz come with mad skillz on the dance floor. Popin', lockin' and str8 busting on the dance floor. I also love the bar. Any bar that comes weak and has no Makers then walk out the doe. One othe thing is that they have freeeeeeeeeeeee water, dope.
