Slow Cooking Love – I've gone to Cook's nearly ten times for dinner now; part of what I love is how each time has been a different, but wonderful experience. The menu is constantly changing, with a few absolute customer favs that stay on as staples. I can bring my meat eater buddies who drool over the slow roasted brisket, or vegan friends who can choose from an ever-increasing menu of innovative "faceless" dishes.
Some of my favorite appetizers are the crabcakes and the blue corn crusted tempeh. They pair well with a glass of (well-priced!) wine, which the waiters have always been helpful in recommending. Experimentation is the name of the game here. If you're feeling out-of-the-box, try attending one of their monthly "sustainable supper" dinners with all locally grown vegan fare. Some dishes are still works in progress, but they're always, always wonderful to try. And the best part--Jenny is right there to talk about them with you!
I will warn that certain dishes on regular nights may be sold out because the place takes such pride in making things fresh; extras are never left sitting around all day (I'll get you one day turkey meatloaf!). My best advice is to try the place three times. It's like the love that you didn't notice at first, but grows over time. Or you can order an AMAZING Jivana vegan cake to go (How do they make that faux buttercream so good?) and fall in love right away like I did!
Good for lunch but not spectacular enough for dinner trip – Solid and casual, w/ a vibe that is a notch above diner, Cooks was definitely cute and had LOTS of vegan options and delicious sweet potato fries. However, I wasn't blown away with anything and found that while the food was good, it wasn't anything to write home about. Great as a healthy, fresh lunch place for those working in the area but nothing I'd drive w/ friends for dinner. At least the night we were there, service was PAINFULLY SLOW...
Excellent Food, Variety, and Service – Double Dutch is a great lunch spot - they offer a wide variety of salads, vegetarian, and meat dishes. The salads that come with the meals are filling - full of mixed lettuce and chopped vegetables. The meals also come with a choice of two side dishes - the vegetables are amazing! I could have been content to just eat a full plate of vegetables alone. They were thinly sliced and grilled - flavored with a perfect blend of "something." The raspberry salmon is unique and amazing. Their sweet potato fries are also some of the best I've ever tried. Portion sizes were great - I left feeling full, but not overstuffed. Everything was prompt and fresh, as well.
My Favorite in LA! – I adore Cook's Double Dutch! Their vegan dishes are amazing, their specials are always delightful, the menu is creative and fresh, the service is wonderful and the atmosphere is so easy and comfortable. I've never had a problem hearing the people I'm with, and I've never felt so close to others' tables that I can't extend my arm without elbowing the person next to me (I hate that). I heard their wines are great, but I always go with their microbrews which are select (about 8) and wonderful. I can't say how their meat dishes are, I'm a vegan and have yet to go with my meat-eating friends, but if the vegan and vegetarian dishes are any indication, I'm sure they're fantastic. I'm a little hesitant to share this hidden find, but I felt I had to let the secret out. Cook's Double Dutch is one of my favorite restaurants in LA. Try it, you won't be sorry!
Serves Meat but has a Vegetarian Only Menu--Awesome! – Went to the Double Dutch last night and really enjoyed it.
A small place with a cozy atmosphere. We don't eat meat and our server directed us to their vegetarian only menu. He helped us choose a dish from all of the options and was attentive and friendly.
The food was yummy! Bravo to the chef. Will definitely be back with non-veg friends as well.
Looking forward to trying dessert next time.
Really wanted to like it - but just couldn't ! – We are both vegetarians and we were hoping for a good place to go with non-vegetarians, so we can all have a great meal. On a Sat. at 9:00 PM, the place is empty, but it has a good ambiance. We had the Black bean soup which was very good. I had the Vegan Burger and my wife had the vegan tofu dish - both were terrible. The burger was very dry and had no flavour. The tofu dish was fried, oily, and very bland - I never understand how people can make a tofu dish and still manage to make it so unhealthy ? The deserts were ok - but also not great.
I want to find more restaurants that offer food choices for "both" vegetarians and regulars - but not like this.
bland and service was terrivble – service was poor and the restaurant was empty. food was bland (when it finally arrived!). I would skip it.
Editorial Review – Restaurant features homestyle cooking using local organic produce. Vegan selections are available.
Tasty and innovative dishes at reasonable prices – It's very cozy at the Double Dutch and the chef is very good at making creative and traditional dishes flavorful and beautiful on the plate. I've tried the brisket, the linguini bolognese, veggie special, and flattened chicken. All were delicious and at a great price ($10 for the linguini!).
Tasty, interesting, well-prepared food – Entree prices in the $16-19 range; salads entrees $10-12.
They have meats, organic vegetarian choices, as well as seafood.
We both had the very tasty grilled raspberry salmon with Earth Rice and vegetables du jour. Their white bean soup was one of the best I've ever had. And I had a taste of their watermelon gazpacho, which was really yummy.
It's kind of a casual, funky-decor place. They also do a separate desserts business called Cooks Country Cakes.
Well worth a visit; and just a few minutes from the Jazz Bakery, if you're going there.
