Sacramento's original microbrewery pairs great beers brewed on site with decent bar grub. Did we mention the beer? – The Scene
Paintings of soused pigs decorate the stairwell walls leading down into Hogshead, but nothing quite so barnyard-decadent waits inside. Hogshead does have a pleasant atmosphere, though, with brick walls and a green cement floor.
Opened in 1985, Hogshead bills itself as "Sacramento's 1st Micro-Brewery," and brewer Dennis Lynch has concocted a number of refreshing beers and seasonal ales, including a smooth golden ale and an unbelievable blackberry beer. Hogshead serves up pedestrian brewpub food, but it's generally a tasty lot, with a good mix of sandwiches, salads, pizzas and hot entrees. The appetizer nacho plates are compulsively nosh-able but not every dish is a gem.
What to Skip
The hot roast beef sandwich consists of piles of sliced beef atop two stale pieces of bread smothered with gravy. You're better off with the pulled pig sandwich, which comes covered in a tart barbecue sauce.
