One of best mexican restaurants in town – Love Vallejo's. Great, authentic mexican food. Avoid the chain mexican restaurants and get some good food.

Upscale – This is the Vallejo's for the under 50s group. A classic place with great decor and service. It's hours, decor, ambiance, menu are geared to the downtown office clientel. This is for the non-Spanish speakers who know what good, authentic Mexican food is and seek out places where they can get it.

Need Better Service – I have now eaten at the three Vallejo's in the downtown Sacramento area. I at at the one at 1331 O Street today and while the food was pretty good, the service was lousy. Things that should have been included in the dish were not and the waiter kept asking "did you not find it in there?" after he was told that something was missing. We wouldn't have told him something was missing if it weren't. I recommend that the owner(s) of the Vallejo's Mexican Restaurant at 1331 O Street, either hire new employees or retrain them.

The authentic Mexican touch pleases die-hards, the California touch pleases the lightweights, and the tequila pleases everyone. – The Scene

This little restaurant rocks during the week, when it's heavily patronized by downtown businesspeople looking for a little south-of-the-border relief from their dreary office environments. Weekends are a better time to enjoy its Tex-Mex charms.

The Food

The chicken quesedilla tends to have a funky texture, so stick with the steak. Entrees fall somewhere between the traditional Mexican food we grew up with and the yuppie, California-Mex stuff we gravitate toward now. Any of the burritos will fill you up for only a few pesos. But beware the veggie burrito which is basically a huge slab of cheese wrapped in rice, beans and tortilla. Garlic scampi shrimp and the Zapata, a humongous burrito stuffed with whole beans, rice, meat, guacamole, pico de gallo, and cheese is topped with mole sauce and melted cheese.
