I live near the American River Bicycle Center on Folsom Blvd in Sacramento and over the years I have brought several bikes in for repairs. I have always been very happy with their service.
Most of the time when they had the needed parts, I got my bike overnight or within a day or two. Even when they have to order parts they have been faster than I expected.
Their prices are reasonable and I never felt that I was being charged too much for the work they performed. I believe they are 100% honest and they have always done good work. They guarantee their work for 30 days but I haven't had to bring anything back.
I've never bought a bike from them, but when I need a new one I will definitely go to them first. They have a big selection.
American River Bicycle Ctr – Well, after reading some of the reviews both good and bad, I 'took it with a grain of salt' so to speak. Having been in the home remolding business for 20 plus years, it been my observation that many customers are overly picky, and have unrealistic unachievable standards of perfection when it come to other people doing work or providing them a service and thus more often than not, prone to exert effort in complaining, and exert no effort when they they are satisfied with the service.
So, on that note here is my review.
The shop itself is rather small and unassuming a typical mom and pop operation no plus or minus, its proximity to a light rail stop puts it within very easy riding distance, a big plus for me. upon riding up to the store I was very pleased to see a bike rack right in front, which is often over looked by other bike stores Ive been to, though it looked beat up its another big plus for me.
The interior is poorly illuminated and at first I thought it might be closed (A couple of 13watt Compact Florescent Bulb's from the dollar store would work wonders, if over head is a issue). The layout is poor, the first thing you see when you enter is a grimy tune up/repair area, which in my opinion should be tucked away in one of the back corners, but thats where the customer service counter is. Even though I understand "dirty" work, it seems backwards in my opinion, even in something like a full service garage, though greasy grimy work is the main service provided, you dont have customers strolling threw the grease pit, to get to the service/parts counter, it just sets up a bad first impression, customers aren't there to work.
Though I didnt spend anytime looking at the bikes that where for sale they did appear to have a small but good selection. However I did notice right off the bat, that the place had several "real world" dirty banged up MTB's here, there and everywhere, which again in my opinion is fine for OUT in the "real world", but are a eye sore and deter from the shiny new bikes, and again sets up a bad impression, you just dont park a dirt clod next to anything your trying to sell.
There appears to be a lack of understanding in first impressions, and how the division of "real world" grimy and dirty and the customer service/sales world of bright shiny and clean effects sales. I felt hesitant to spend my money there, and thankful I was wearing work cloths, however, having "grease pit" experience, I put that aside and by observation the place had a good variety of parts and tools, the service was satisfactory and their prices on comparative parts/tools I know of where reasonable.
If your looking to participate in the Tour De France this is not the store for you, if you your looking for affordable budget minded DIY parts, tools, variety and a better quality that you cant find and or get at a department store, or time limited and want a local store then this is the place. Over all I would recommend the store, but it wouldn't be a first choice recommendation (Performance Bikes near Sunrise and Madison is #1 in my book) and though the shop might not be dirty per se, it gives off a grimy impression and I wouldn't wear anything that your worried about getting dirty. I also recommend the store staff re evaluate their layout, lighting and improve upon first impressions.
They must not need new business – Called the store to ask about attaching a bike trailer. The disinterested employee told me to ditch my kickstand, and when I asked about another alternative, just quickly said - "I don't know" and then didn't say another word. He sounded like he couldn't wait for the phone call to end, and so I will make sure that my business with American River Bicycles never begins.
Great neighborhood resource – These guys do honest work for a decent price, and they are pretty quick about it. Other places will take weeks. This is the first place I go for parts and minor tune ups.
Good, honest bike shop – This is a good neighborhood bike shop. I recently took a 10+ year old mountain bike in for service. I hadn't done any real work on this bike since I bought it. The staff did a good job recommending repairs. The work was done professionally and on time. They replaced only the parts which needed replacing and even trued one of the wheels for free. I highly recommend this place.
Worst excuse for a small business I've encountered – Can't believe this moron stays in business. Had the worst experience ever with these half-wits. The owner should be ashamed of himself for either not caring what type of service his employees offer or being so removed that he isn't aware. Either way you get the same result. After my bad experience with them it wasn't hard to find another bike shop that actually treated their customer like they were valued and followed thru with what they were being paid to do!!!
I'm not one to normally take this kind of time to review a business - but these guys warrant it - stay away and tell a friend to do the same. Take your business to someone who values it.
Great place for Bike Repairs – My husband has been going here for years and is very satisfied with the service. I recently brought my sons bike here for tire repairs after running through a patch of briars on his way home from school. Staff was quick, courteous and professional. Cost was reasonable and bike was ready next day.
Will definitely keep coming here.
Sorry, But... – I took my bike into the shop for a routine tune up and to have the breaks and seat adjusted; I scheduled with the staff to pick it up after two of days. When I brought the bike home, I noticed that it still had the same dust and crud in the same spots around the seat and chain as when before I brought it into the store. In otherwords, it's like your friendly neighborhood Jiffy Lube who you can tell didn't actually change any oil because the gaskets are still melted to the metal. Lastly, you get the kind of customer service that can't wait to get off work and go road surfing with their weekend drinking pals unless you 're one of their weekend drinking pals. In the latter case, you're in the clique and you're cool, man, cool. Big disappointment for a specialty bike shop around the American River area. Staff weren't horribly obviously dishonest, but it counts all the same.
