The perfect Midtown venue for indie and smaller touring bands and high school graduations. – The Scene
After sitting closed and in disrepair for a decade, the Memorial Auditorium finally reopened its doors in late 1996. Completed in 1927, the memorial was Sacramento's premier venue for everything from circuses, boxing/wrestling matches and ice shows to high school graduations and state government events. But the Memorial is best known as a concert house, with a list of performers that reads like a who's-who of popular music. Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and more brought big bands there. And in the '60s, '70s and '80s, such music icons as the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand, Frank Zappa and many others took the Memorial stage. Today, the auditorium enjoys the look and atmosphere of its glory years, with its ceiling repaired, the archway and columns regilded with gold leaf and restenciled, and many other faithful refurbishings.
