My experience was a good one. I dined at Davenport's in 2007 (apx), and the pizza-all of it, was delicious.
Reply to Absentee Owners – To Danial1972, I actually used to work at Davenports in the kitchen. You'd be shocked to know that the owners, who you claimed to be absent, have everything to do with the "rule," and yes it is a rule, of which you're speaking. Several times I had to tell customers of this rule, knowing perfectly well that they could've eaten their to-go pizza at a table. Problem is, when we're busy, and others have been waiting for 45 minute, some bozo calls and wants to eat his to-go pizza inside. When you've been open for 45 years, these instances start to add up; just as laws are passed over time due to new unforeseen changes in society, new rules are needed in busy establishments to ensure quality service to the most diners (dine-in is more important than to-go at Davenports).
As to your comments on the youth that RUN Davenports, it was very uneducated. It would help if you knew that these young employees have to deal with these owners that you referring to. Every morning at 7 a.m., 2 women(owners) come in and make all their secret recipes, no one else is allowed in the restaurant, not even the general manager. Only at 10 a.m., are non-Davenport family employees allowed to enter. (owners are afraid of someone stealing their recipe). We have 1 hour to prep for open compared to other establishments 3 or 4. During their time with these secret recipes, they walk ALL OVER the entire restaurant and put little sticky notes on every little tiny thing they can find. Smudge. Crumbs. Dirt. clean. anything and everything you can imagine. the crew comes in, not to a human director, but a slew of notes that can at times be rude and downright mean. Never, in the 10 or so times I walked past the owners did they ever introduce themselves or ask my name. So you'll know that the youth that you're putting down so badly are only trying to keep their jobs. The thing is, the employees do care, but saying anything around Mrs. Opal, a Davenport family member who listens to employee gossip and gets employees fired on a regular basis, is not good for job security. So, I agree with you, Davenports is way over-priced, and they have some crazy rules that no-one can wrap their head around. But don't blame the help. They're just doing their jobs. Everyone has to follow rules. I'm sure you have to follow a few rules that you don't want to; that's how you get enough money to buy 22 dollar pizza and get your wife's hair done, ALL BEFORE YOU GET YOUR KIDS FROM SCHOOL. Sounds like the good life. Great Pizza, Crazy Owners, Employees Stuck in the Middle
Poor service and sinking fast into oblivion – A major disappointment time after time. Many people know better than to go to Davenport's, but someone in the group or at work always insists. It always is a downer.
The reason is they are cheapskates and provide very poor service. The pizza flavors and textures are fine - it is a good recipe. The execution of the pizza is inconsistent, but the basics are there.
The minimim wait time between ordering and dining is 45 minutes. It doesn't matter if you dine in or call ahead to take out: 45 minutes. It doesn't matter if they are packed or there is one other table: 45 minutes.
They are chronically understaffed on purpose. Forget about getting a drink refill or more salad dressing.
Call ahead for take out and they will always tell you 20-25 minutes. It is never less than 45 minutes and often more than 60 minutes.
It is also expensive. Two mediums cost $33, and are barely enough for four people.
The staff is rude and condescending.
Most of the pizzas are decently made. But in just one take out order of four pizzas, the cheese will fall off two of them, one won't be cut all the way through, etc. Their attention to the details of proper saucing, cheesing, baking and boxing are dismal.
They have had a following for so long they believe they can chisel their customers, treat them rudely and provide poor value.
Absentee Owner now Service Bad – I was waiting on my wife while she was getting her hair cut next door to the restaurant; so I grabbed a phone book from the salon and called ahead to order pizza so we could have a hot pizza waiting for us when she was finished getting her hair done. We had just enough time to eat and then pick up the kids from school without being late. I WAS SHOCKED when the order taker advised me I couldn't "call ahead" then "dine in" . If I ordered ahead, I would have to pick up my pizza and leave as a "to go" customer. So I simply said I'd ordered a "TO GO" pizza thinking I'd just ask for a table when i got there. When I went to pick up the pizza 20 minutes later, the restaurant was empty except for us. It was about 2:00 p.m. I told them I had ordered a "to go" pizza and asked to be seated so we could eat the pizza. They advised that the pizza was ready, the cost was 22.00, but that we could not eat the pizza in the restaurant since I had ordered it "to go" because "the owners had a rule". I told them they could keep their hot pizza and their dumb rules and that I'd keep my 22.00 and go to ANOTHER PIZZA JOINT after I picked up my kids from school. Besides, we'd lost our appetites by this time. Obviously the restaurant owner no longer operates the place, instead leaving it to mindless youth who don't care. Later that evening, we ended up dining peacefully at Di Vinci's Pizza in Homewood instead and it was delicious. Sorry Davenport.
Excellent pizza & great atmosphere! – Davenport's pizza is my all-time favorite, and I will continue to go back as long as I live in Birmingham. This place has been popular since the 60's for good reason - it has great pizza! The games are one-of-a-kind and great for kids (or adults). If you love pizza, you will love this place! This place has been in the same family for about 40 years, which is another reason I think it's great - there aren't too many places like that anymore!
Ok, not great. – This place was ok at best. To the "best pizza anywhere" reviewers, perhaps they've never left Birmingham? Or maybe that's the owner? Keep in mind this is the same site (Citysearch) that gave Chuck E Cheese 4.5 stars. The atmosphere is good, what you'd expect from a local pizza place. Crust was thin to the point of being cracker/crispy. Sauce was tangy and good. A little heavy handed with the cheese. Basic toppings. 2 huge negatives: 1. Pizza is cut up into tiny squares. Why would you do that? The pieces are either all crust, funny little wedges, or cheese covered messes. Impossible to eat, never mind fold. 2. Price. My large pie with 3 toppings (pepper, onion, sausage) was $23, which is absurd for what you're getting. Maybe because it's in Mountainbrook? At 1/2 the price I'd think about going back. Otherwise, I'll take my chances elsewhere.
Best Pizza anywhere – Absolutely the best pizza anywhere! Handmade and kneaded dough right in front of you... Try the pepperoni, bacon and ham thin crust... DELISH! Atmosphere is quaint and will deliver a memorable pizza experience for the whole family. A Birmingham must do!
Great Location – Located in a cute quaint area, this restaurant has a small town feel located in the big city. Mountain Brook is so cute with its small family owned restaturants and stores. Davenports adds to the ambience, not to mention the food is terrific. The pizza is perfectly thin, the salads are wonderful. Highly recommended.
