Working-class Polish fare gets the California treatment at this intimate Old-World eatery. – In Short
This century-old Craftsman house has been transformed into an elegant Eastern European restaurant with vintage Polish posters, crisp white tablecloths and knowledgeable servers. Lively clientele fills the dining room with the buzz of conversation. Warszawa boasts an menu of authentic, high-end--but reasonably priced--Polish cuisine. Bacon-wrapped dried plums present an offbeat starter, and the traditional borscht, spiked with kielbasa sausage, exudes extra flavor. Pierogies come in a wide variety, including beef, chicken, wild mushroom and lamb.
Beautiful homey setting, great food and drinks, terrible service! – Not much to look at from the outside, inside this restaurant feels like a home. They serve great, strong drinks and their food is excellently prepared (if you aren't in the mood for heavy Eastern European fare, they have an entree that includes a sample of each of their many, delicious and interesting salads). But the service is just awful. The waitresses are actually very sweet, but they disappear for seriously 20-30 minutes at a time, and the whole restaurant gets antsy. One time I was there another customer actually bellowed at the waitress "You can't DO that to people!" I felt bad for her, but the guy was right. So go here, but only if you're not starving and in the mood to linger over dinner.
Great authentic dishes! – I told this to my friend long time ago, I thought I'd share since I didn't have an account with citysearch at that time, it was about half a year ago when I went...
RECOMMENDED DISHES: All! Especially the out of the ordinary ones. To name a few:
Appetizer - Chopped Filet Mignon (steak tartar) - all rare meat, don't think it sound bad, the flavor is great
Soup - Tripe polonaise (tripe = cow stomach) - it really doesn't sound as bad as it is "defined"
Entree - I had the lamb dumpling, it was ok, my friend had the Polish hunter's stew called "Bigos", very tasty, it's with sausage and meat and veggies.
Great authentic food. Before I go on, not all the food are "weird" (as some people may call it) but if you're not scared of trying new stuff or different parts of a cow or animals, they have some great dishes. See dishes above.
Very good food, AWFUL service – I've been wanting to check this place out for a while, especially after reading positive reviews. Finally made it there this past Saturday for dinner and aged while waiting for my food. People are right, the food was very good, but having to wait an hour and fifteen minutes for my dinner after ordering is not what I call good service. It may have been an aberration...let's hope so.
New Favourite! – I had so much fun at dinner here. The food is great and the atmosphere is fun. We sat outside... Omin and George are absolutely awesome. Ask them to recommend a polish vodka. The beef pierogi is great and I really enjoyed the cabbage/jasmine rice/beef entree.
They play movies in the background in the back patio area...it's a great place for summer evenings.
Terrible Busboy Service - OK food – The good things are that our waitress was very nice, ambience was different and enjoyable being seated in a house-like setting rather than your typical bustling restaurant, and they made special accomodations by bringing out ramps so my grandmother in her wheelchair could get up the steps. The busboy staff were the real downers. The busboys never refilled water (we had to ask our waitress to do that), they were in such a rush to clear our plates that the busboys were already asking to clear my mother's plate while she had food on her fork and a good portion left on her plate. I thought it had to be a joke, but they kept on doing it! Other things were bad too like their offer for bread was accepted and never brought. It's such a shame, I will never go back here again
A funny place to go – I loved this place, not just because the food was good and the wines affordable, the service is awesome!!! They all seem to be like crazy people but they are kind and helpfull. I really think it´s one of the best options in that part of the city.
Unique Homey Place – If you are looking for something unique and non pompous, try this restaurant that takes you back in time and makes you feel like you are in the eastern block dining on traditional cuisine. The food is very tasty and the menu offers many dishes you don't often see on other menus across LA. The crowd is average age 80, but there are families mixed in to mellow it down. The servers are few and far between, unfortunately, making it very slow, but all in all, a good experience if you have patience and the will to try something new!
This Place is Awesome!! – I NEVER SAW AN ADVERTISMENT ON CITYSEARCH THAT WAS 100% POSITIVE! Lets face it, there are always player haters!
Well this place was worth the rave. I took a date there and we had a lovely dinner and plenty of drinks (thanks to our lovely waitress we even got one on the house!), followed by listening to a 40s band playing in the courtyard. The croud was fun, and the atmosphere very thick. The band was such a nice treat and change from the normal stuff you get at these places. Suffice to say, my date was very happy with the performance that night ;)
Really great – I will definitely be going back to this place. The food was just so so good. I had the blurberry perogies for dessert. I definitely recommend them.
