Major Mistake! – I took the advice from a friend who works nearby this restaurant to check it out even though he hadn't been there himself. Big mistake. The owner was literally screaming at another customer for debating some charge on the bill when we walked in. Everyone was looking at him like he was crazy. Not a good start. I sat down with two of my girlfriends and they promptly informed us what they had run out of. Okay... My wine choice was also 'not available' that evening as well. When I asked the waiter what exactly was left to choose from, he simply walked away. I informed the manager who said they would take care of it. They didn't move an inch for 10 minutes. I went back to complain and they said if we couldn't wait that we could leave. That was all I needed to get my girlfriends and walk out of that place for good. What a joke! I actually thought I was on some hidden camera show. I'll never be back to this disaster again!
Total Disappointment. – This is one of those restaurants that you walk away thinking "How can they stay in business'? I've been to countless restaurants throughout the world and this definitely ranked as one of the worst overall. I don't even like writing reviews since the experience is usually different for everyone but this restaurant needs to be avoided. I was there twice for dinner (first time on a date, second time for a group celebration) and both times they made mistakes on the orders, rushed us, and management couldn't care less. I had to send my lobster ravioli back because IT HAD HAIR COOKED INSIDE IT. Management said it was mine. I'M A BLOND - THE HAIR WAS BLACK! They just walked away annoyed! No one from our group enjoyed the experience. If you want to be overcharged for attitude and tables that are practically touching each other - this is your place. For the rest of us, we can choose from the countless other Italian restaurants that actually enjoy having customers!
What a disappointment! – I went here in December with my friend and our sets of parents. We made reservations early, because we had 6 people. We were so excited for a romantic meal that let us all get to know each other through some great wine and food. The wine was excellent, but everything else was not. Our waiter was very snooty, showing disapproval of whatever we ordered... maybe it wasn't expensive enough for him, but we made up the bill in our bottles of wine. He brought the wrong food to the wrong people and then tried to not let us return it when we realized it was not what we ordered. Obviously we complained enough for him to comply. My mother's lamb was burnt to a crisp, but she was too nervous to send it back since our waiter had been so rude up to this point. My friend's father sent it back for her, and once again there was an argument with the waiter. We were half way through our desserts and finally starting to relax a little when our waiter informed us that we had to leave! WHAT?!? We weren't even done with our desserts or coffee. He didn't care, and told us they needed the table. WE MADE RESERVATIONS!!! Our bill was almost $600 and we were being asked to leave!!! Are you kidding me?! The cherry on the cake was when I went to pick up my car from the valet, brand new 2008, and found 2 giant scratches in the bumper. Lovely! At least the valet didn't try to deny it. This was just such a disappointing night. We had heard such amazing things about this place and had it not been for a very nasty waiter, we wouldn't have had a problem paying the money for a special outing. But the food just didn't make up for how poorly we were treated.
Fantasic Steak & Ravioli & Wine – This place has great food. All of these were excellent: Pumpkin ravioli, filet mingon on the bone, creme brulee, tiramisu, NY Steak, sea bass. The steaks are cooked perfectly. The pumpkin ravioli is so creamy and delicious with a taste of nutmeg. And the creme brulee is what a creme brulee is SUPPOSED to taste like. The following were good, but if you're going to pay as much money as they charge, go with the aforementioned instead: asparagus ravioli, hazelnut crepe, cheesecake, carpaccio. It is expensive, but I say if you order right, it is worth it. It's a bit crowded, but whatever. Deal. It's also out of the way, but worth the drive. They aren't very good at getting you in on your reservation time, but the rest of the service makes up for it. You should also go with a rich attorney, so they can pick up the tab.
Giorgio Bladi, A Pleasant Surprise – I thought the ambiance and food would be somewhere along the lines of Dan Tana's meets C&O Trattoria meets Pace but it was much more intimate, with elegant simplicity and a small, entirely Tuscan menu. Yes, it was full and, yes, there was a short wait but it was Saturday night at 8:30pm.
Since 1990 owner-chef, Giorgio Baldi, dishes out the dishes and sips his favorite Amarone while surveying the dining room like Yurtle the Turtle from his open kitchen. The space is warm, modest and very nicely lighted.
We began our meal with the special beef carpaccio with white truffle cream sauce (white truffles arrive fresh from the Piemonte region every fall) and a proscuitto crostini with fonduta. The carpaccio was so carefully and thinly sliced and so fresh that it just dissolved in my mouth. From the handmade, hand-cut pasta menu I ordered the agnolotti, ravioli with sweet corn and white truffles. The raviolis were about the size of a quarter -- the portion was perfect, not too chaste not too monolithic. They were just wondrous, tender and delicate. I felt a symbiotic relationship with some musty, mountainous woodland, surrounded by large oaks and dappled light. Really just delightful. Our wine pairing you ask? We paired the entire meal with two bottles of the very same Amarone that Mr. Baldi was sipping while he worked. This is a powerful wine with some definite oak flavors and fresh red fruit. A perfect match for pastas, veal or even the bistecca fiorentino.
Maybe it's silly. Maybe it's so Hollywood. Maybe it's overrated. It is certainly a bit pricey. But for an expensive, silly, Hollywoody, overrated Los Angeles (well, Santa Monica Canyon) haunt the food was damn good and the night was chock full of entertainment and fun times. I love this town.
Guaranteed great meal – The location is good/bad and I like the casually chic feel to the restaurant. The food is fabulous and complimented with a good wine list..service is ok..this is my new go to Italian restaurant..been many times over the years..I was a loyal Il Sole diner but its cuisine is slipping badly.... ..Giorgio is a guaranteed great meal..by the way the sauce is for sale in Bristol Farms though I prefer Raos out of NY. and e.baldi in Beverly Hills - a haunt of the euro crowd- is horrible.....couldn't wait to get out of there.
Wonderful (but expensive) restaurant – This restaurant is a gem - I've never had a dissapointing dish and I always leave wanting more. The service is impeccable, the presentation simple, yet elegant and the ambience is very relaxing. The sole drawback is the price. If I could, I'd eat there everyday, but this place is best enjoyed for special occasions.
Best Best Best Italian food! – After living in Milan, Italy for 5+ years, I know what Italian food is, and Giorgio's is like being in Italy.
The food is spectacular......ravioli di zucca (pumpkin), the proscuitto plate (you need to ask them to put it together...not on the menu), the little lobsters, the 1-lb stuffed lobster, asparagus ravioli, and their nut sauce (on anything) are all amazing...like what you would eat in Italy.
The restaurant itself is small and dark, which makes the experience more entertaining and intimate. I think the restaurant holds only abouut 45 people at a time, so reservations are a must...and a couple of days in advance if for Friday or Saturday night. Arrive ontime, otherwise you will be pushed back to be seated. Be prepared to spend a small fortune, but it is completely worth it. If you are like me and spend $500 on shoes, you will not be disappointed, but if that scares you, the prices will scare you here.
The waiters speak fast, but if you don't understand what they say, just ask them to order for you....everything is great on the menu.
The second time we went, it was during truffle season. We went in six people and the bill worked out to $1700 + tip, but we went all out with the truffles and wine. I guess we spent a lot because Giorgio sent over tiramisu for everyone. And I now have the nickname, "Truffle Girl".
great restaurant, absurdly expensive – I've been going to Giorgio Baldi about threes times a year for the past 5-7 years. I can't say I've ever had a bad meal there and I always enjoy the authentic Italian atmosphere, good food and people-watching. This past time however, we went with four people and the bill was close to $700. We crank Pinot Grigio, ordered appetizers, but even split one of the entrees. It is a good restaurant but just not at all worth that kind of money. There are many other equivalent Italian restaurants in LA and BH.
I am retracting my 10 to a zero – This place is perfection. I have been nothing but frustrated with LA restaurants but this one gets a 10!
The veal ravioli (sheer joy), the white truffle parpadelle is to die for and the veal chop so tender it brought tears to my eyes. The waiter suggested a fabulous Big Tuscan red that went well with everything and I will return again and again.
I AM TAKING AWAY MY GOOD REVEIW AFTER EATING AT GB ON SUNDAY, AUG 12TH. WE HAD A 9:30 RESERVATION AND WERE SEATED AT 9:45. ORDERED AT 10PM AND AT 10:45 WE WERE THE LAST TABLE AND CHEF GIORGIO YELLED ACROSS THE WHOLE RESTAURANT FOR US TO GET OUT AND DID WE THINK BECAUSE WE HAD A RESERVATION THAT WE COULD HANG OUT AT THE RESTAURANT ALL NIGHT? WE WANTED DESSERT BUT OUR SERVER WHO WAS VERY INCOMPETANT TOLD US THAT THE KITCHEN HAD CLOSED. WE WERE NEVER TOLD IT WAS CLOSING AND SO WE LEFT WITH NO DESSERT/COFFEE. I WAS HORRIFIED BY THE BEHAVIOR OF GIORGIO YELLING ACROSS THE RESTAURANT AND TOLD HIM I WILL NEVER BE BACK (I EAT THERE EVERY MONTH) AND TO THAT HE YELLED "GOOD". NICE!
