Izzy's Deli Sucks ("0" stars if possible) – This place is extremely over priced. For instance, $15 for a salad...really??? I can go to Bob's Market down the street and pick up one of their pre-made to-go salads and I won't see one piece of wilted lettuce. I can't say the same for a (supposed) freshly made salad from Izzy's, that's for sure. Plus, their chicken noodle/matzah ball soup DOES taste like dishwater! Sure, you get good sized portions, but a hearty portion of crap is certainly not a good thing. By no means is this place a NY style deli...and Izzy should be ashamed for claiming it as such. More like a "Santa Monica Alley Deli".
Furthermore, their servers are extremely rude or shall I say completely off their rocker. One example: My family and I were dinning there and when the server asked if we were ready to order, my husband asked for a couple more minutes as we were discussing something (non-food related) and hadn't had a chance to look at the menu. The server stood there for what seemed like 10 seconds, and (according to my daughter) looked at me and said, "What's your problem?" Confused, I looked around then looked up at her and said, "What? Are you talking to me?" She was looking directly at me and said, "Yeah, joo got a problem wit me?" I said, "No. What are you talking about? I wasn't even looking or talking to you." The funny thing is, my husband and I weren't even discussing anything problematic or that had any kind of negative tone or connotation to it. My husband then jumped in and said, "Whoa! Who the hell do you think you are, talking to my wife like that when no one at this table has said or done anything to you!" He then asked for the manager who came over immediately, but was too old and bewildered to do or say anything at that moment (he was out of breath from walking from the cash register to the SE corner where we were boothed...say about 18ft.). Realizing the waitress just got away with her behavior, we picked up our things and immediately walked out. That incident caused us to boycott the place for 2 years until finally we caved and went back thinking maybe that crazy server was gone. Of course, we should've known better. This time our waiter (yes, a male) took our order and brought to us an entirely different order within a shorter than usual amount of time it takes to get your food. We kindly explained the food was not what we ordered and it probably was for a different table. Wouldn't you know it, the waiter had the audacity to argue with us and tell us we indeed ordered the food he brought to our table. We were like WOW...REALLY???...another psycho server?!?!?! This took about 10 minutes of going back and forth with him, requesting he look at the other orders he submitted to the cooks and Izzy himself coming over, before the waiter finally realized he was mistaken. And after all that, no discount and cold breakfast. We're good citizens so we paid the bill, but we left a penny (on purpose) for a tip.
Suffice it to say, this place has for sure burned it's bridge with us. No way in hell are we going to pay those outrageous prices for THAT kind of service and eh food. I used to work in the bar/restaurant industry and I believe in tipping well over 20% for good service...their loss, someone else's gain.
So...if you're OK with spending your hard earned money for way over-priced over-rated mediocre food and you want to take a chance in having Sybil or Norman Bates as your server...Izzy's is your place. (Gag! Puke!)
Btw - there is one genuinely nice server. His name is Juan (he's bald). He is the only reason we ever tried to go back in the past. Unfortunately, the slight possibility of his presence isn't reason enough for us to endure the other BS.
This Restaurant Needs Improvement – The Chicken Noodle Soup was awful. Tasted like dishwater, no flavor. Dining is extremely noisy with the busing area in the middle of the restaurant. Who needs dishes clanking and lots of noise when you are trying to enjoy your meal?
Most items are not worth what you pay, except the corned beef sandwich. The corned beef dinner, corned beef is tasteless.
What's with the vegetables? Carrots, carrots, carrots. I suppose because they are cheaper than other veggies.
Worst Chicken Noodle Soup EVER! – I've had several things at this deli in the past, but today was the worst! I have a cold and stopped in for a container of $7.50 chicken noodle soup. they packed it up, I get home and find that there is not one piece of chicken in the soup! more than half broth and 1/3 noodles. I never write on these sites, but I'm so pissed off I just had too! Won't get taken like that again!!!
Don't buy the water bagels from the Deli!! – On 9/23/09 I just bought 2 water bagels from the Deli in addition to other items. The counter guy got them from the plastic bagel box on top of the Deli Counter. I got home, very hungry, and the water bagels were VERY, VERY DRY and very hard - my first tip-off that they would be bad!
I was pretty upset knowing that my dinner was ruined. I guess I know now why people go directly to Bagel stores in the area.
So beware, my best advice is to go directly to a Bagel store that makes them fresh! Which is exactly what I did today and got myself some fresh, soft bagels - they were wonderful!
Good sandwich, good Slaw, big portions – The half a turkey sandwich is fresh carved turkey breast, the slaw is excellent and the rye very good. I would compare with any deli outside of NY. The portions are huge, and the service was outstanding. We had at least 3 people filling our drinks and checking on us.
This is a great local joint if you want good deli.
Izzy's "Isn't" – This deli is dull. The matzo ball soup is totally unnoteworthy, the deli corned beef is from a slab or package and it's just plain BORing. The brisket is almost flavorless and the dipping sauce for it, au jus, is like water. This isn't a New York deli. It's a west coast wannabe a New York deli deli.
Everything you could want from a Deli – I love the fact that everything is served in such big portions for such a reasonable price. It's a great restaurant to visit during passover, thier Matzoth-balls are amazing! This Deli truly lives up to its reputation, because their sandwiches are extremly overstuffed!! I will definetely go back because this is one of those rare restaurants where your dollar goes a long way.
late night – i love that this place is open late at night. i seriously could eat anything on this menu, i haven't ordered anything bad yet, kind of like porto's! anyone recommend anything not to eat?
Best Deli in LA...By Far – Izzy's Deli is by far the best deli in LA. Not only is this my opinion, but the Food Network selected it as the best deli on the West Coast. It is totally an authentic New York deli! The food is delicious, the portions are huge, the prices are extremely reasonable for the massive amount of food you get, and the staff is welcoming and friendly everytime I go! I often have the tuna melt and french fries, which is my favorite, but everything from the wraps and salads, to burgers and corned beef and pastrami sanwiches are fabulous. I have always been overly satisfied with my meal. I bring people there all the time and everyone is always happy! I definitely recommend Izzy's...it's the best deli in LA...by far!
Since 1975, this all-night Santa Monica deli has been serving overstuffed sandwiches among walls splashed with NYC posters and signed celebrity photos. – In Short
Bringing a little bite of the Big Apple to Santa Monica is Brooklyn native Izzy Freeman. While this is no new news to locals, the roomy hole-in-the-wall deli has been offering up everything from pizza to marinated herring to pile-it-yourself baked potatoes long before "Saturday Night Fever" was retro. Looking for some kosher vittles? Menu mainstays like the matzah ball soup [Insert Yiddish exclaimation here], and, of course, meaty New York-style deli sandwiches are here for the taking. Want to know about the many framed celebrity photos and faded NYC posters lining the walls? Ask the overworked yet friendly staff and they'll gladly tell you the history. As the restaurant motto goes, "If you're hungry, but don't know what you're hungry for, come to Izzy's."
