Even sushi purists cite the $15 sashimi lunch specials here as the real deal. But if you really want to splurge, let the chef serve you his choice of the day's freshest fish.
Sit at the bar and order al la carte. All the sushi is fresh and awesome. And be sure to ask the sushi chef what to order--he knows best.
Great sushi @ an affordable price!! – The sushi is always fresh here and the service is good. I always enjoy sitting at the sushi bar bc I know I will be well taken care of.
The Chirashi bowl lunch special is worth the trip to dtla! But come before it open or after the lunch rush!! If not, you will have to wait!
Downtown is the spot – I love downtown...they always have restaurants that have good quick lunch specials...but if you're ever in the hollywood area...Club Sushi is a good place too.
Simply Great! – The food here is terrific and the service is usually pretty good. I've been here with my friends quite a few times and they all loved it. The only downside is the long wait during dinner hours and the atmosphere is only mediocre. Sushi Gen is amazing nonetheless.
Great Sushi~! Best Sushi so far in L.A – I lived in Japan for 14 years, and almost gave up that there is no Sushi that came close to what I use to eat in Japan. Many Sushi place ran by Korean people here in SoCal. (I'm not being racst, i'm Korean) But Sushi men at Korean owned Sushi place don't really know how to make real sushi, unless they went Japan to be trained. In Japan, minimum length of training to be a Sushi men is 3 years. 1st year they don't even allow you to touch rice. But here...Sushi men starts working right away without any proper training.(i know it because two of my friends are in this business). Some generous person treated me to this Sushi Gen last year, and me and my friend ordered almost all the sushi at Sushi Gen. And Boy~! This is closest I have had worthy to call it Sushi. This generous gentlemen treated me and my friends (12 of us) and came out to be $750 (including $120 tips..he was very generous). So yea, don't know if I can go there again due to it's price...but definitely great Sushi. Oh I do have to say that just because Sushi place is ran by Japanese owner and Japanese Sushi Men does not mean they are great Sushi. If you happen to stop by San Francisco, never go to Tsunami (number 1 Sushi in San Francisco by CitySearch). Although it is owned by Japanese people and Japanese Sushi Men...these Sushi men definitely never had any training. I got so mad that they sell those awful things as Sushi. Anyway...just couldn't help but say this everywhere on City Search.
Amazing sushi – My boy mentioned this place to me a few times and finally took me there. It was his first time going there too. It was a week night and the place was crowded. They sat us immediately at the sushi bar as we had requested. We got "Omakase style" and we were truly satisfied with everything the sushi chef served us. We love uni and I have to really give this place 5 stars for the delicious uni that they have. All of sushi there is amazing. We left there oh so satisfied. If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. That is how good it is. From the service to the food. Yum yummy yum.
Worth the wait – We finally tried this hidden jewel in Little Tokyo. When we arrived, there was a long wait, but we were told it was always like that. Once we sat for dinner, everything was smooth sailing. Everything we had was amazing besides the miso soup. The fish was so fresh and cut perfectly. I'm jonesing to go back as I'm writing this review. Yum!
The only place to Eat Sushi in Los Angeles – The best service, food and fish in all of Los Angeles. This is the way to experience Sushi. Sit at the Sushi Bar and ask them to take care of you and you will not be disappointed.
Great! – Consistently good sushi. Service is so-so, and the wait is always long, but that's what you deal with when the sushi's good. I've never had a bad sushi experience there, but I'll admit that if you go there for the terriyaki, you may think the place is overrated. You need to really like sushi. Price is reasonable for the high quality.
What can I say "HomeRun" every time I visit – Been to Sushi Gen more than 5 times, and never feel even a bit disappointed.
Though on the pricey side, the quality of the fish does worth every dime you pay for.
If you are an experienced Sushi fan, definitely should go for the Sushi Bar seating. You can whatever's best for the day.
I go for sushi bar every time I visit Sushi Gen. Love it love it!
Lunch Has Never Been So Good – So somehow I ended up in Little Tokyo one Saturday afternoon. By 1:30 I was hungry and Sushi Gen was right there so I stepped inside. There were not that many customers so I just sat myself at the bar. The staff was attentive. The sushi chef was fantastic. The fish was heavenly. I could not get enough. I tried uni, ebi, hamachi, toro, unagi, and a few others plus a sashimi combination. They were ALL great. No wonder I was so full afterward.
