Usually I’m the person who likes to go out and enjoy a nice dinner at a restaurant with good food along with friendly service. I enjoy a variety of restaurants and enjoy a wide range of authentic foods from all cultures.
So over the weekend I took the time to check out this Indian restaurant named “Star of India” located in Phoenix, address 4025 E Chandler Blvd, #14, Phoenix, AZ 85048. The restaurant’s weekly hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. This restaurant is purely an Indian restaurant serving only Indian entrees. Star of India offers a popular lunch buffet daily from 11 to 3 pm, and also offers take out service and catering.
The whole atmosphere of the restaurant was very calming, not too loud nor not too quiet, this is definitely a kid-friendly restaurant as there were kids present at the time of my outing. The décor was very nice it focused on India’s culture and their background displayed by paintings, dinnerware, and other décor. The overall colors of the restaurant were red and white which come from India’s culture. The table and booth we sat at were very clean and well presented; silverware and water were present, as well as the restaurant’s dinner menus and specials.
The Menu offered a range of different categories from appetizers, tandoori dishes, curries, desserts; these are just a couple of what they have to offer. One important note to all this is that before this time I’ve never eaten Indian food before. I ended up choosing the Tandoori Shrimp Masala, honestly I thought the portion given did not match up with the price whatsoever. I didn’t like this dish, the taste just wasn’t my kind of food. The sauce topped on the shrimp was way too much, it was just basically a dish with a vast amount of sauce and hardly any shrimp. Along with the Masala I also tried Garlic Naan which was basically garlic bread, this dish did have an appetizing flavor to it and I enjoyed it. For Dessert we tried what was called Pista Kulfi which was Indian style ice cream with pistachios. I thought the ice cream could’ve been presented a lot better, it was hard as a rock. The taste was nothing special it pretty much just seemed to be any kind of pistachio ice cream.
The service from beginning to end was great, the workers were very nice and were helpful to the fact that we’ve never been to their restaurant before. Our waiter made sure we had everything we needed throughout our dinner and made sure our experience there was well worth it.
Overall I did enjoy coming to this new type of restaurant, yet I don’t see myself coming back anytime soon, not because of bad service but because I just didn’t enjoy Indian food as I thought I would. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys Indian food, fast service, and a friendly staff.
Like eating a cardboard box – I am a visitor to Phoenix staying with family. This eveing we tried takeout from the Star of India. I can say without a doubt this was the worst Indian food I have ever eaten. Bland is a word that gives this food too much credit. I, as most people are, expect some degree of taste in this type of cuisine, there was absolutely no noticable spicyness or taste. I am quite annoyed as I write this as I very much look foward to Indian food on the occasions that I have it and I feel like I have been extremely let down ( I am even contemplating getting in the car and trying to find some decent indian now) . Apart from the poor food we ordered three dishes which came with barely enough rice for one person (after asking if rice was included). There is nothing personal to this review, I am so scathing as the food really was that bad and also for the reasons described above.
Cream laden food – If you have read my reviews then you will know I'm a harsh critic. I feel like a lot of these reviews are written by people who don't eat Indian food often and are not qualified to judge what is good and not good. Please understand that like Chinese food, Indian food is fairly tasty and addictive due the spices and cooking techniques so even the worst Indian restaurant wil taste really good to non-Indians and people who aren't used to eating Indian food regularly. Star of India is good but is hardly the best or even one of the best Indian restaurants in the valley. Their food is not prepared by a professional Indian chef and that can be tasted. The food tastes like it's been prepared at home by a very talented Auntie. Now while an Auntie's cooking is fine, it's still no match to that of food prepared by a professional chef. I would strongly encourage the readers below to venture to Tempe and Phoenix to taste Delhi Palace, India Palace and Jewel of the Crown.
Best among the Rest in town – Excellent food and wonderful service. This restaurant is a regular stopping place for me. The welcome by owner preet and the Quality service given makes u feel great to have food at this wonderful place with light indian music and great service from preet and all his staff draws you back to the star and believe me it is the star of india.
I was also happy with his catering service for my daughters b'day party ,yum yum.... no comparision.Preet u are a star truly u are one.Keep Growing ! God bless u .
PROS: Wish you had a party hall.
CONS:Serving a bowl of plain or jeera rice with a entrees would be great like in mid west(minneapolis).
Best Indian in the Valley – Being from Boston where there are tons of good indian restaurants, this place is the gem of indian food for the valley. The owner Preet is almost always there and welcomes you to his pride and joy.
The food is very good and has some unique dishes that we've never seen before; keema naan and chicken naan, both of which are delicious with tamarind chutney. The kabaab was a little dry, but still had a good flavor and was served with a pile of onions, green peppers, and lemons. Aloo Mutter is different than the east coast style of using a tomato sauce base, as there's is yogurt based. Still very good, just different.
Anyway, go and check out Star of India and support your local small business and you'll soon feel as if you've become part of an extended family.
Pretty good, excellent for AZ – Start of India was recommended to me by a friend from Rajasthan. I've been to a few Indian restaurants here, and although they just do not compare to the places in California, this one was pretty good. The chicken makhani was very good as was the Naan. If you're looking for excellent authentic Inidan cusine, Arizona in general will be a huge disappointment to you. However, if you are looking for something that's passable, this is your best bet. The staff was friendly and attentive. The music was good. the atmosphere was a quiet and subtle. Just a nice place overall.
Worst Indian food so far in the USA – I have had indian food in different part of the US (LA, Chicago, St Louis, Phoenix, Memphis, etc) and beyond doubt, this was my worst experience of Indian food. I was dissappointed with the food and the service. I went there with a group of friends to try a 'new' Indian restaurant but had such a bad experience.
Anyone who is appreciating this place probably doesn't know what good indian food is. NOT RECOMMENDED!
Best Indian in the Valley so far! – Ordered food to go for a company potluck. Food was really good, especially their Tandoori Chicken. People, who never experienced Indian food, liked it. Restaurant owner, Preet, is a very nice pleasant man who gave us a good discount because it was a company function.
User review by lcristler – Fantastic food and the staff is really nice. Its the best Indian for miles I highly recommend.
Best in the field – This is the best Indian cuisine I have ever had. The service, food, and friendly atmosphere are without peer. The small extra effort needed to find this jewel is well worth it. Cooked and spiced to perfection, the wide selection of dishes earns this restaurant 5 for 5 in my books.
