Known for its famous french-dipped sandwiches, Philippe's been serving up their renouned piled-high sandwiches for over a century! Order the roast beef & ask for it "double-dipped." It's seriously the BEST!
No visit to LA is complete without a "dip" into the gravy pool of goodness served up at Philippe's. The staff is super friendly too. If they were located closer to my house, I'd be as big as my house!
Single dip if you don't like your bread soggy, but you can get up to double, triple and quadruple dipped. Their mustard is spicy and their coleslaw and potato salad is a must.
Mouth-watering – I don't get to Philippe's enough. Fantastic dipped sandwiches and painfully delicious mustard. Sooo good. Expect long lines at lunch during the week, and whenever the Dodgers are playing at Chavez Ravine.
Once is enough – I have heard about Phillipes for a long time so I finally tried it. It was OK. I think the atmosphere and history behind the establishment has fooled people into believing the food is better than it is. the food was average and I probably would not go back. If you have not been there I do recommend you go at least once.
dippity do dah – Whenever a friend or relative comes to LA, I try to take them to Philippe's. With a deliscious dip sandwich, mustard and coleslaw on the side and fine cup-o-joe, it's a great way to get someone into the history of Old Los Angeles, before you start on any of the fantastic adventures Downtown. Don't forget to buy a t-shirt
Best Dipped Sandwich – Great place for a delicious sandwich if you are in the downtown Los Angeles area. Not too pricey, but why have fast food when you can have a Phillipes style dipped sandwich. The location is excellent down the street from Union Station. I most certainly would recommend it to anyone who loves sandwiches.
Like Lambs to the "au Jus" – The beef sandwich is just fine, but try the lamb, it's verry nice indeed. The spicy mustard really sets it off. Then get yourself a glass of homemade lemonade and a cup of tapioca and a 9 cent cup of Yuban for desert. Heaven, baby!
YUMMY CAKE – They have the BEST yellow cake with chocolate frosting. It's just like homemade...
French Dip Wars, Part I – In the legendary battle of the French dips, Philippe gets my vote. I am partial to the beef sandwich, double-dipped (natch) and top it with a dollop of the rip-snorting house mustard. Don't let the sawdust-covered floor fool you, Philippe offers some great wines by the glass.
