Read about the great pizza, out of town on business from Chicago. Saw they were open til 10pm, drove 20 minutes to get there, arrived at 8:40p only to be told that they didn't feel like making us a deep dish pizza because it took too long and we could get a thin crust instead. The restaurant was empty aside from us and we were shocked- who does that? They said they say they close at 10 but like to get out by 9/9:30. My advice? Call ahead to make sure they are even open or in the mood to make you a pizza. I mean, who does that???
Best Chicago Style Pizza Outside of Chicago – We have been going to Vito's for about 3 years and the Pizza has always been excellent. The people who own it now have the same staff and the quality of food has been very consistent. If you are from Chicago the deep dish is better than Pizzeria Uno or Pizzeria Due and much better than Lou Malnatis. I recommend this restaurant to everyone who wants authentic Chicago Style Pizza. It is definitely worth the drive.
Things have changed – This used to be one of the best Chicago pizza places in the valley. The Tortorici family ran it. The family also had Tortorici's pizza in Arlington Heights, IL. Great pizza. I used to eat it all the time. They sold the reataurant here and retired. The new owners have since "Phoenix-ized' the pizza: different crust. different cheese, skimpy sausage, and not browned on top, Chicago style, but left with the cheese barely melted. Just another ho-hum Phoenix pizza and no longer worth the drive or the price.
Phoenix's best Chicago Style Pizza – Vito's continues to be our favorite Chicago-style pizza in the Valley. Think of a hot thick pizza loaded with your favorite ingredients, mozzarella cheese and the tomato sauce on top.
In fact, we were back in Chicago over the holidays and Vito's was better than the Gino's East pie we had there.
Northern Ave and 43rd Ave in Glendale.
It has changed – Last year in the fall, the original owner, the one who created the great pizza reputation retired. I understand the sons took over. We had ordred just after the take over not knowing the father retired. We noticed a difference but ignored it. Ordered again only this time the deep dish. Deep dish usually had all the stuff on it with the sauce on top. This time it didn't and had found out about the change. Still good but not as. Ordered again last night and the magic and fantastic taste was gone. Evidently the sons think change is better. They've lost us as a customer because now it is another expensive pizza in with all other so so expensive pizzas. It has lost that something that set it apart from all the others. Hope they realize whatever changes they made did not benefit them.
Best Chicago Deep Dish in AZ – The perfect Chicago deep dish pizza. Great sauce and fantastic crispy crust. Total dive where you bring your own beer or wine. I'd compare it to Giordano's Pizza in Chicago.
Best deep dish pizza in town, bar none, but service could be better. – As a native NYer, I know my pizza, and Vito's has made a Chicago-style convert of me. Their thin crust is pretty good too, but their thick, sauce-laden deep dish is a work of art, a deeply-satisfying and filling evening meal (which is why their only being open evenings is correct.). Not cheap, but actually a bargain when you compare it in weight of ingredients to any other pizza in town.
I have the advantage of living relatively close, and have probably been there over 50 times in the past decade or so. I call ahead to order, show up when they say it will be ready, but almost always have to sit and wait another 15-30 minutes because "We're busy." (They are busy EVERY night, so this should not be a suprise, but something they can prepare and staff for.) In all that time, I have never been offered a complimentary small soda while waiting, or gotten an apology. While the service is businesslike, it isn't what you would call friendly or accommodating ... kind of like a pizza version of the Soup N*** from Seinfeld (We have the best pizza, you want our pizza, you have to wait until we say it is ready.) I'd likely go more often than once every couple of months, if that were not the case.
I give the food a five, the service a two, but the food is more important, so I rate them a four overall.
Anyone who knows "chicago style" pizza KNOWs that you get the best UNO'S pizza in chicago – So, right there tells you, he/she/it is no foodie. I am. My family has been going to Vito's for years. I love it and go there for the thick crust. It's great pizza. A hole in the wall, divey (not dirty) great pizza joint.
best hands down – Vito's has some of the best pizza in AZ We don't get to go there as often as I would like to it being that it's 20 miles away but when we want good pizza we drive the 20miles to Vito's The people are very nice, good service The shop is small and little hidden but it helps in the escape from the busy traffic and loud street noises The pizzas are big and taste soo good We like to order the thick crust pizza I'm told that its made the true deep dish way with sauce on top of the toppings the tasted is amazing Every bite is full of flavor and you just can't stop eating until you are as full as you can be We are always taking home left overs because the pizzas are so filling Don't get us wrong we welcome leftovers they are just as good the 2nd time than the 1st
Note: Vito's is only for the true pizza lovers Anyone less will not be able to handle such amazing pizza
A Real Disappointment – One thing is certain, just because the Arizona Republic gives a restaurant a good rating, that doesn't make it so. Vito's was anything but good. Never mind that the place is a hole in the wall, as I normally like those kinds of places because they usually house some outstanding eating. But this place was dumpy inside. As far as the food goes, they serve basically either deep dish or thin crust Chicago style pizza. There were four of us, and we ordered two different deep dish pizzas. Both were lousy. The pizza was basically nothing but thick crust heavily covered in tomato sauce. And it wasn't very good sauce either. It tasted like it was right out of the can. There was very little cheese on it. Gads sake, a pizza with hardly any CHEESE?? We ordered mushrooms and sausage, and had to hunt through our pizza to find the items. We surely never tasted them as the sauce overpowered everthing. It was even running off of our pizza. The same was true for the other pizza our table ordered. I can't believe that others are rating this place so good. That is why we decided to try it. I would not waste my time or money here, as it was not cheap for something that was made very cheaply. This was truly the worst pizza I have eaten since living in Arizona. If you want a real deep dish Chicago style pizza and a good one at that, you have to go to Uno's.
