My favorite place in town! – I've been here for breakfasts with my mother, lunches by myself while hanging out downtown, and for dinner with a foodie that I wanted to impress (and he was!). The menu is accomodating for any style or palate, really.
The food isn't overly greasy, overly simplified, or so complicated that you can't identify with it. I've tried almost every thing on the menu at some point, and have never had a complaint -- only compliments, and a delighted stomach!
Extra points for the awesome penny-covered floor.
A Tucson gem – I was a regular at Grill for years during college, and now that I've moved away to go to med school in Chicago, it's one of things I miss the most. Grill has an attitude about it, most apparent on the back of the menu, that I find fun and charming. The wait-staff work their asses off to ensure that you get great service with character (I'll let you interpret that when you go), and the piles of high-quality, delicious food for cheap will leave you satisfied. This of course is not to mention the ambiance of the place (it looks like it was transported straight out of the fifties, which I'm sure, much of it was!), and the live music in the Red room. I moved just after the smoking ban started in Tucson, and although it's not quite the same without it, Grill is still fantastic. They also make a pretty stiff drink if that's what you need! Highly recommended. If you're ever in Tucson, check out the bars on 4th ave., and then mosey on over to the grill around 12...you won't be disappointed .
I LOVE GRILL!!! And the Freakin' Awesome Tortilini is FREAKIN' AWESOME!!! I'm not gonna lie, the place is a little run down, a little dirty, and the service is a little... bad? But don't let that deter you if you like unique, groovy places with really, really good food!
Great atmosphere but not so great food or service – I think the best thing about the Grill is that they give local musicians the opportunity to perform in their Red room. It's also nice and cozy in there. The Grill has an overall fun and unique atmosphere. So if I was writing a review strictly on the atmosphere- I'd give the Grill a 9. But I am writing a review on the food and service.
My friends have been dragging me to the Grill every now and then for over 10 years. It is definitely a good place to go after hanging out at the bars. Watch where you sit when the coolers are on- those overhead vents bl*w on you like crazy. I've never gotten quick service. In fact, I've never gotten good service. Usually the wait staff forgets someone's order. And most times the food is cold. I used to order the milkshake (they were really great years ago) but the servers hate to make them and lately they've been so tasteless and made with too much milk that it's not worth it! The last time I ordered one- I waited 20 min. for my shake and I had to find my server to see what happened. She forgot and I got nasty looks while one of the waitstaff made my chocolate shake (which tasted like vanilla)... so I'm done with the shakes. The food is always disappointing, although some of my friends have been adventurous and ordered things like pasta or their specials and have really liked the results. So maybe it's me and my place in the universe. The Grill and I are not aligned and we were never meant to be. I'll still go for the music and to hang out in the Red Room. And there are plenty of people who love the Grill so it's worth a try.
24 hour diner very handy for partying downtown – better to arrive a little before 2am on the weekends than a little after 2am, when everyone who has been kicked out of the bars is looking for somewhere else to go.
"When dining out, always insist on food!" (or something like that - the fine print on the menu is entertaining.)
Grill is the best restaurant ever! – I had an excellent time at Grill. The service was prompt, the food was incredible and the staff was extremely entertaining (to say the least). I would strongly recommend stopping in anytime you are around downtown Tucson.
Basic, good eats at a funky and colorful 24-hour, downtown grill and bar that attracts a cross-section of Tucsonans. – The Scene
The long, main room lines stools on the sides of the serving area from the front door to the kitchen. Deep-blue walls, tomato-red leatherette booths, scuffed linoleum floors and art deco paintings of deer hint at Grill's long history. Through an archway, the bar contains more booths to accommodate the coffee or whiskey and cigarette crowd.
Order anything except melted cheese on the famous, homemade tater tots that have a layer of flavor picked up from a busy deep-fat fryer. The burger totes half-a-pound of ground round on a sturdy bun. The portabello mushroom sandwich is slathered with hummus and a garlicky red pepper sauce. The beer cheddar soup is a luscious combo of beer-glazed onions and garlic simmering in Swiss, provolone and Muenster cheeses with little potato cubes. Add an ice cream milkshake or an Italian soda embellished with a layer of whipped cream.
Talk about GOOD FOOD – This is one of the best casual dining cafes in Tucson. If you want to see a blues/jazz infusion band play just stop by any Friday or Saturday night. The food is amazing...try the country fried steak or if you're a vegetarian have one of the great salads. The atmosphere will throw you back to the 50's and the service is absolutely amazing. Be sure to sit in the Red Room for the best service.
