Great Food and Good Service – My friend and I went to this restaurant because I had read the reviews and thought I would try it out. We actually got lost on the way there (I'm still very new to Denver) and when I called, the owner answered and gave me specific directions from where I was. (Very nice!) I was expecting a normal Chinese restaurant and when I got there I was so surprised! The business is actually in a something like a strip mall, but the atmosphere was fantastic! All the windows are a type of stained glass art. The beautiful tables and chairs were even like a decorative part of the whole place. Old style lamps! We felt like we were back in Japan at one of the tea houses there. We were greeted very warmly and seated promptly. As soon as we were seated our server was there with water and ready to take our drink orders. I was so happy they even had choices for their hot tea! We finally decided on our food, not too many choices though. Our food arrived piping hot and much faster than I expected and it was served to us by the Chef himself! The food was very good. Most places have overpowering spices that seem to conquer the taste of the other ingredients. This place had food that was seasoned to perfection! I could taste the meat and the vegetables and it was all cooked. The meat was perfect for the dish and the vegetables were just right. I had the Scallops in Shrimp sauce and it was to die for. My friend had a Beef dish (not sure what it was, but it was tasty). The portions were really big... too big for me to eat. I already recommended this restaurant to several people and they have all told me great things as well. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to taste their meal not just the seasoning!
Inspiring Chinese Food! – Me and my family have enjoyed Heaven Dragon for many years. The food quality and service are consistently good. A store front local does not represent Heaven Dragon well and may keep some from missing out on some very good Chinese. The menu is ever expanding and diverse. Personal favories are Orange Beef and Lemon Chicken with Combination Lo mein. I have read a few of the reviews about the Republican lobby which it is mostly, however there is a Democrat or two pictured with the owner Dan. One of my favorite parts of Heaven Dragon is the owner who as a young man escaped Communist China, made his way to the United States and has become an owner of a sucessful business that has served the even the President. A very great and inspiring accomplishment that pallets from either side of the aisle can enjoy.
Editorial Review by City Editors – Popular Thornton Chinese restaurant keeps regulars--including President Bush--coming back with dishes like Peking duck and Hunan beef.
It used to be good... – My husband I have been eating here for years, and his parents even longer. We all agree that Heaven Dragon is going downhill. They stopped putting veggies in the fried rice so now it's just well, overly salty rice. The pork lo mein used to be our favorite dish but something is different - a lack of flavor it used to have. Now it just seems way too full of oil. The orange chicken used to be better too - in fact if you go to Heaven Dragon's counter part in Arvada you'll find that the Orange Chicken is to die for! The way it used to be here. Dan, the republican loving owner, could also use a lesson in being humble. Since he knows my husbands family he always comes to talk to us at our table, which is nice - except when it's just to boast about his recent accomplishment. One recent trip left us disgusted when Dan helped himself to food off of my Mother-in-law's dish!?! Gross. The service is something that has improved. We've always been used to rushed servers who were less than polite. They've hired more servers in the last year who are very friendly and attentive. Bottom line, Heaven Dragon is a long time favorite of ours but it looks like we'll be looking for a new favorite. If you are going to eat here go during lunch, the prices are better and the meal comes with soup and egg roll.
Best sesame chicken in Colorado – In 2001 my husband and I moved to the Thornton area, and just down the street from us is the Heaven Dragon restaurant. From the outside it doesnt look like anything special. Its nuzzled in a corner of a Safeway parking lot and just looks to be one of the many run-of-the-mill Chinese food restaurants that frequent Colorado, which is why it took us a couple of years of living in the area before finally deciding to try it. Im kicking myself now for not trying it sooner. If youre a democrat, the lobby area can be a little unnerving since there are pictures of George W. and Governor Owens with the owner of the restaurant plastered all over the place. I guess on one of Dubyas visits to Colorado he had a hankering for some Chinese food and someone suggested this place and he really liked it. If the pictures in the lobby dont spoil your appetite, you wont be disappointed in the quality and taste of the food thereafter. My husband and I usually start with the potstickers and share their sesame chicken for our main course. The food is always amazing and the service is for the most part prompt and personal. Despite its outer appearance, the restaurant is actually quite cozy and nice.
Greatly Disapponted – After reading all the great reviews, we thought maybe there could be a good chinese place in North Denver Metro. After all the President loves the place. I figureed he might have an educated taste for chinese food. Well we were certainly disappointed. Perhaps it was what we ordered, but I don't think so.
The way I would discribe the food was bland. The Hot and Sour soup was nothing special and the Won Ton soup looked pretty bad (I did not taste it), nothing green it, not a speck.
The fried dumplings were also only fried on one side and nothing special.
Tsia Chicken (can't remember tha exact name) was billed as being spicy it arrived wtih a hand full of red chile peppers, but the dish had no spice to them, the dish had only a hint of heat, not what we expected, on the plus side the vegies were cooked just right.
Our other dish was from the specialty page of the menu, asperagus with shimp chicken and beef. Again the vegies were cooked just right but the dish was just hohum.
Two bites into the meal and my 15 year old daughter said, well, this is nothing special. The stuff we make at home is much better
The quest for good chinese in the north continues. We will not go back. I guess I still disagree with everything that GW believes in.
Oh yes the price was very resonable though.
Great Food--Take the Decor with a Grain of Salt – My husband and I are both transplants, and spent several years looking for great Chinese food. Well, we finally found it. Not only is the food fabulous, but the service, atmosphere, and attention to detail make it a real dining experience. As for the decor, we are both Democrats, however, we still enjoy eating here. Please look beyond this and take the restaurant for what it is. Support good food and a local restauranteur rather than political beliefs. We all need to lighten up just a little bit.
I Crave It all the Time – When I first started at my job my co-workers took me here and It was great. The food is the best I have had, the service is good. The value is even better. You get tons of food for luch so you will never leave hungry or satisfied. Plus the fact that the owner Dan is down to eaarth and will walk around and talk to his customers makes this place one of the best. In fact I am going today!
Best in Thorton – I would love to start out with the picts...so the owner is proud. It is the pres. fav. chinese rest. in denver. Everyone should be proud of their accomplishments...and his is GREAT FOOD. The Hunan beef was amazing, and the Sesame chicken is the best i have ever had. The atmosphere is great as well. Big stained glass windows, and awesome picts. of china...Every thing is amazing at this restaurant
OMG - Same thing happened to me when I ate there – The giant almost lifelike pictures of both George Bushes and Governor Owens (that's three pictures, folks) made me a bit queasy as I waited for my table. The food was good (great Sesame Shrimp) but the service lacked. And then when you go to pay, you're greeted again by the images of George Bush Jr. and Sr. and Billy Owens. Yikes. I won't return.
